Genesis 1:26 records God announcing his plan to create humanity, and it gives the reason humans hold a special place in creation: they are made in God’s image and given authority to care for the world he made. The verse is God speaking, and in the narrative he speaks in the plural, “Let us make man,” to the heavenly court or to the members of the Godhead, depending on how you read it. The first humans are the ones addressed by the work of making, and the rest of the creation is placed under their care.

God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

What Genesis 1:26 Means

The verse begins with God deciding to make a new kind of creature. Unlike the animals, which God calls into being “after their kind” in the verses just before, humans are made “in our image, after our likeness.” That phrase means humans reflect something of God’s own nature: their capacity to know, love, make choices, speak, and relate to others. It does not mean God has a physical body like ours, since Scripture consistently presents him as Spirit.

The second half of the verse gives humans a role. They are to “have dominion” over fish, birds, livestock, the whole earth, and every creature that moves on it. Dominion here means rule in the sense of responsible stewardship, not casual exploitation. A good king in the ancient world was expected to provide for and protect the people and land under his care, and the verse presents humans in that light.

What the verse does not promise is a detailed account of how human nature works or how every question about origins should be answered. It tells us who humans are in relation to God and to creation, and it stops there, leaving the rest of the story to unfold in the chapters that follow.

The Context of Genesis 1:26

Genesis is traditionally attributed to Moses, though many scholars date its final form later and see it as drawing on older traditions. It was written to a people who had recently come out of Egypt and needed to understand who their God was, where the world came from, and where they fit in it. Chapter 1 presents creation as an orderly work, with each day’s making set apart and called good.

Verses 23 through 25 describe God filling the sea, sky and land with creatures, each reproducing after its kind, and calling the work good. Verse 26 then marks a shift: humans are made on the sixth day, and they alone are made with a special relationship to God. Verses 27 through 29 continue the thought, saying God created humanity male and female, blessed them, and gave them the command to be fruitful and to care for what he has made. Read this way, verse 26 is the turning point where the creation account moves from the wider world to the people who will live within it and answer to its Maker.

Key Phrases in Genesis 1:26

Genesis 1:27

God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.

(WEB)

This verse follows directly after the one under study and states that God created humanity in his image, male and female. Reading it alongside verse 26 shows how the image of God belongs to every person equally and gives both men and women their dignity and calling.

Psalm 8:4-6

4 What is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him? 5 For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet…

The psalmist marvels that God cares for humans and has crowned them with glory and honor, giving them rule over the works of his hands. The passage echoes the creation account and shows the same pairing of human dignity and responsibility.

A Short Prayer From Genesis 1:26

Lord, you made me in your image and gave me a place in your world that I did not earn. Help me remember that my worth comes from you and not from my success or my failures. Teach me to care for what you have entrusted to me, whether that is my time, my relationships, or the good earth you made. Shape my choices so that they reflect the care and wisdom you show to all you have made. Amen.
