Psalm 85:10 means that God’s mercy and God’s truthfulness come together in a way that also brings righteousness and peace into harmony. The psalm pictures these four qualities not as rivals but as close companions who greet one another with a kiss. The verse is part of a song sung by the descendants of Korah, a Hebrew community that prayed for their nation to be restored after a season of hardship.

Mercy and truth meet together. Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

What Psalm 85:10 Means

The verse begins with “mercy and truth.” Mercy is steady, faithful kindness toward people who do not deserve it. Truth here means reliability, the quality of God keeping his word. In most lives these two feel like they pull in opposite directions: we want a kind judge who will not be too strict, or a strict judge who will not be too soft. The psalmist says God does not have to choose. In him they meet.

The second half speaks of “righteousness and peace.” Righteousness is right dealing, the setting of things as they ought to be. Peace, in Hebrew shalom, is more than the absence of conflict. It means wholeness, things fitting together well. The image of a kiss suggests warm, mutual welcome. The verse does not promise that every hard circumstance will vanish overnight. It describes the character of God’s dealings and expresses confidence that they will ultimately hold together.

The Context of Psalm 85:10

Psalm 85 is a communal prayer, and the surrounding verses make its purpose clear. In verse 7 the people ask God to show them his loving kindness and to grant them salvation. Verse 8 sets up the hope that God will speak peace to his people if they do not return to folly. Just before verse 10, the psalmist expresses confidence that salvation is near to those who fear the Lord, so that glory may dwell in the land.

Read in that setting, verse 10 is not a general observation about the universe. It is a statement of hope spoken by people who had reason to doubt, and it looks ahead to what the following verses describe: truth springing from the earth, righteousness looking down from heaven, and a fruitful land. Understanding this helps the reader see the verse as a promise woven into a prayer for restoration.

Here righteousness and justice form the foundation of God’s throne, while steadfast love and faithfulness go before him. It helps show how righteousness and mercy work together in the way God governs.

A Short Prayer From Psalm 85:10

Lord, you are merciful and you are true, and I thank you that you never have to set one aside to honor the other. Where I have been torn between kindness and honesty, teach me to walk in the way you walk. Let right dealing and genuine peace meet in my home, my work and my friendships. Remind me that your faithfulness holds even when I cannot see how things will turn out. Amen.
