This prayer is for weddings, whether you are a couple preparing to marry, a parent standing beside a child at the altar, a friend asked to give a toast, or a guest who wants to lift the day to God. Pray it in the weeks before the ceremony, on the morning of the wedding, or whenever a marriage is about to be joined in front of people you love. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and hopes that belong to your own situation.

Blessings for Weddings

Father, we come to you on a day that is full of promises. Two people are standing before you and before one another, and they are choosing to give their lives into each other’s keeping. Be present in every word that is spoken and every vow that is made. Let their love be patient when they are tired, kind when they are hurt, and honest when it would be easier to hide. Guard their hearts from pride and from fear, and teach them to speak gently to one another when the day is over and the guests have gone home.

Lord, we ask you to bless the families who have gathered here, the ones who have prayed for this couple for years and the ones who are meeting for the first time. Knit them together with grace, so that old tensions soften and new relationships take root. Watch over the travel home, the late nights, and the small mishaps that always seem to come with a celebration. Let joy be the thing everyone remembers most, and let the couple know from the first hour of their marriage that they are held by you.

Thank you for the gift of marriage and for the way you use two ordinary lives to show something of your faithfulness. We trust you with the years ahead, the seasons we cannot yet imagine, and the work of building a home. Make this day a true beginning and not only a memory. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless this marriage and the two people you have joined today. Give them patience with each other, courage in hard seasons, and a deep sense of your presence in their home. Surround their families with peace and their friends with joy. Let this day be a sign of your steady love, and let it grow into a life that honors you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Genesis 2:24

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the couple as they leave their former households and begin one life together. Ask God to give them the freedom to put each other first without losing the love and respect owed to their families.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to make the marriage a shared strength. Pray that when one of them stumbles, the other will be quick to help them up and not quick to point out the fall.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Read this slowly over the couple, pausing on each quality of love. Ask God to form those qualities in them daily, so that patience and kindness become habits and not only wedding-day wishes.

Colossians 3:14

Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

(WEB)

Pray that love would bind this marriage together in harmony. Ask God to let their love be the thread that holds every other virtue in place when the years grow long and demanding.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Bring this verse before God as a reminder that a home cannot be built by effort alone. Ask him to be the builder of this marriage and the one who guards it in every season.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer early in the morning of the wedding, before the phones start ringing and the schedule takes over. Sit somewhere quiet, such as a chair by a window or a bench near the place of the ceremony, and hold a cup of tea or a printed copy of the prayer in your hands. Pausing to breathe between paragraphs keeps the words from rushing past you. If you are a parent or close friend, you might pray it while holding the couple’s hands or resting a hand on a shoulder.

You do not need to pray it alone. Invite a spouse, a pastor, a bridesmaid, or a grandparent to read it aloud, or ask each family member to add one sentence of their own. Keep a copy in your bag or on your phone so you can return to it during the reception or later in the year, when the couple faces their first hard conversation. Prayers spoken at weddings often matter most in the ordinary months that follow.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this couple and keep them, and may his face shine on them with grace and peace. May their love grow deeper with every year, and may their home be a place of welcome for all who enter. Whatever the road ahead holds, may they never walk it without God beside them.
