These short prayers for pastors are written for anyone who wants to lift up a pastor, a pastoral couple, or a church staff member in prayer. Pray them on a Sunday morning before the service, during the week when a pastor is facing a hard conversation, or whenever his or her name comes to mind. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Pastors

Lord, you are the Shepherd of the sheep, and you have chosen to shepherd your people through the men and women you call to lead your church. I lift up my pastor to you today. You know the weight of the sermons still being prepared, the hospital calls that come at odd hours, the email inbox that never empties, and the quiet worries about whether the church is growing, shrinking, or simply surviving. Give them rest that is real and not only a day off on paper. Give them clear thinking when the decisions are hard and wisdom when others disagree.

Protect their family from the strain of a calling that never fully switches off. Keep their marriage strong, their children secure in your love, and their own heart close to you. When they feel unseen, remind them that you see every late night and every prayer whispered in an empty sanctuary. When criticism comes, let it sharpen them rather than wound them, and keep bitterness far from them and from the people around them. Fill them with your word so that they teach it faithfully and live it honestly. Let their preaching carry your truth and their care carry your tenderness. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my pastor is carrying more than I can see. Strengthen them for the next conversation, the next sermon, and the next hard decision. Guard their rest, their family, and their joy in you. Let them feel your nearness today, and let your truth shape every word they speak. Thank you for the gift of their leadership. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

Pray that your pastor would lead with joy rather than with groaning, and that the people they serve would make their work a gift and not a burden. This verse ties the health of the church to the health of its leaders.

Ephesians 4:11-13

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…

(WEB)

Ask God to keep your pastor focused on equipping the saints for their work, so that the whole church grows toward maturity in Christ. Pray that their ministry would build people up rather than simply keep the schedule full.

1 Timothy 4:16

Pay attention to yourself, and to your teaching. Continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

(WEB)

Pray that your pastor would keep a careful watch over their own life and teaching, since their faithfulness saves not only themselves but those who hear them. Ask God to deepen their own walk with him day by day.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Remind God, and yourself, that the church does not stand on your pastor’s effort alone. Pray that they would rest in the truth that unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.

Philippians 1:3-6

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now; 6 being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Thank God for the faithfulness he has already shown in your pastor’s ministry, and ask him to finish the good work he has begun in both of them. Pray for patience and hope as they look toward the long road ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their pastor early in the morning, before the phone starts ringing and the day fills up. Keep a note on your phone or a card in your Bible with the pastor’s name and the specific concerns you know about, such as a family situation, an upcoming meeting, or a long illness. Praying with a notepad nearby helps you stay focused and lets you add new requests as you learn of them.

If you have a small group, a prayer partner, or a family member who also loves your pastor, invite them to pray these words with you. Taking turns reading one paragraph each can make the prayer feel shared and steady. You might also write one of the verses on an index card and place it where your pastor’s name often comes up in your day, such as near the coffee maker or on the dashboard of your car.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who called your pastor to shepherd his people keep them steady and strengthen their heart for the work ahead. May he refresh their family, guard their rest, and make his face shine upon them, so that they lead with courage and grace all the days of their life.
