Zechariah 8:22 is a promise that people from many nations will one day turn to the LORD and come to Jerusalem to seek His presence and ask for His favor. The prophet Zechariah spoke these words after the exiles had returned to Judah and began rebuilding the temple. He delivered the message to the returned community, the people of Jerusalem and Judah, who were discouraged and needed hope for the future.

Yes, many peoples and strong nations will come to seek the LORD of Armies in Jerusalem, and to entreat the favor of the LORD.”

What Zechariah 8:22 Means

The verse opens with the word “yes,” which signals that the prophet is confirming and expanding what came before. Where the previous verses described people from one city going to another to pray, this verse widens the picture to “many peoples and strong nations.” The word “strong” matters here. These are not small or powerless groups. Powerful nations, which in Zechariah’s day might have seemed far from the God of Israel, are pictured coming willingly to Jerusalem.

The two verbs describe what they are coming to do. “To seek the LORD of Armies” means looking for God, wanting to know Him and be near Him. “To entreat the favor of the LORD” means asking Him for grace, kindness, and mercy. Together they describe sincere pursuit of God, not merely visiting a holy place out of curiosity.

The verse promises a future movement of people toward God, not a guarantee about any individual’s choices or timing. It does not describe a mechanical result of ritual or location. It is a prophetic picture of hope, showing that God’s purposes reach beyond Israel and that the nations themselves will one day come seeking Him.

The Context of Zechariah 8:22

The book of Zechariah was written in the late sixth century BC, after the Babylonian exile, and it is traditionally attributed to the prophet Zechariah. The community he addressed had returned from exile and was working to restore the temple and worship in Jerusalem. Their progress was slow and their hopes were modest, so the prophet repeatedly encouraged them with visions and promises of God’s renewed commitment to Zion.

The surrounding verses help explain the verse’s meaning. Just before it, verses 20 and 21 describe “many peoples” and “inhabitants of many cities” coming to Jerusalem, with one group urging another, “Let us go speedily.” Verse 23 then pictures ten men from every language grabbing hold of a Jewish man’s robe because they have heard that God is with the Jewish people. Read this way, verse 22 is the central image of a movement that draws the nations into the life of God’s people.

Key Phrases in Zechariah 8:22

Isaiah 2:2-3

2 It shall happen in the latter days, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it. 3 Many peoples shall go and say, “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For out of Zion the law shall go out, and the LORD’s word from Jerusalem.

This passage also pictures many peoples streaming toward the mountain of the LORD’s house. Read alongside Zechariah 8:22, it shows that the vision of the nations gathering to God was a shared hope among the prophets.

Psalm 86:9

All nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord. They shall glorify your name.

This psalm looks forward to all nations coming and worshiping before the Lord. It deepens the picture by linking the gathering of the nations with worship and the honoring of God’s name.

A Short Prayer From Zechariah 8:22

Lord, You are the LORD of Armies, and You rule over every nation and every heart. Draw me near to You each day, so that I seek You with sincerity and not out of habit. Where I feel distant or distracted, remind me that You welcome those who come to You in need. Show Your favor to the people I love and to the world around me, and let them find their way to You. Thank You for the hope that You are gathering a people from every nation. Amen.
