This lesson teaches children that God gave clear instructions for how His presence was to be carried, and that obeying Him brings joy. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the activity.

Big Idea

God gives us clear instructions, and when we follow them with joy and care, we honor Him. Doing things His way matters because He is holy and good.

Memory Verse

1 Chronicles 15:2

Then David said, “No one ought to carry God’s ark but the Levites. For the LORD has chosen them to carry God’s ark, and to minister to him forever.”

(WEB)

Have children stand, then sit down slowly as they say “No one ought to carry” and lift both arms like carrying a box when they say “God’s ark.” Practice it three times together so the motion helps the words stick in their minds.

The Story: 1 Chronicles 15 for Kids

King David had built a nice home in the city of Jerusalem. He wanted a special place for God’s ark, the golden box that reminded the people of God’s presence. So he set up a tent to hold it, and he got ready to bring it home.

David gathered the whole nation of Israel together. He also called the priests and the Levite families. David said, “Only the Levites should carry God’s ark, because the LORD chose them for this job.” Some of the Levites had carried the ark the wrong way before, and people had been hurt, so David wanted everyone to be careful this time.

The Levites made themselves clean and holy so they could do the work. Then they lifted the ark onto their shoulders using poles, just as Moses had commanded long ago. David asked the Levite singers to make music with harps, cymbals, and trumpets, singing loud and happy songs to God.

The whole crowd shouted and played instruments as the ark came closer to the city. God helped the Levites carry it, and they offered sacrifices of seven bulls and seven rams to thank Him. David was so happy that he danced with all his strength in front of everyone.

Not everyone was glad to see David dance. Michal, the daughter of Saul, watched from a window and thought David was acting silly. Her heart was not joyful like David’s, and that is a sad part of the story.

Read It Together

1 Chronicles 15:12-13

12 And said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites. Sanctify yourselves, both you and your brothers, that you may bring the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, up to the place that I have prepared for it. 13 For because you didn’t carry it at first, the LORD our God broke out in anger against us, because we didn’t seek him according to the ordinance.”

Point out that David reminded the leaders that they had not followed God’s rules the first time. Ask children what it means to follow God’s rules carefully, not just quickly.

1 Chronicles 15:16

David spoke to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers with instruments of music, stringed instruments, harps, and cymbals, sounding aloud and lifting up their voices with joy.

(WEB)

Show children that the people sang and played instruments with joy. Explain that worship can include music, and that God loves when we sing to Him with happy hearts.

1 Chronicles 15:28

Thus all Israel brought the ark of the LORD’s covenant up with shouting, with sound of the cornet, with trumpets, and with cymbals, sounding aloud with stringed instruments and harps.

Point out how the whole nation joined in, with shouting, trumpets, and cymbals. Remind children that God’s people celebrate together when they come before Him.

Talk About It

  • Why do you think God gave the Levites a special job to do?
  • What did David do to show that he wanted to obey God carefully?
  • How can you make worship at church or at home feel joyful?
  • What might have made Michal feel differently about the ark coming home?
  • What is one way you can remember to do things God’s way this week?

Activity Ideas

Paper Ark Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask children to draw a golden box with two poles on the sides, like the ark. Let them decorate it with gold and bright colors, and talk about how God’s presence was honored with care.

Carry the Box Game

You will need a cardboard box, a broom handle or two chairs for poles, and a play music source or a drum. Have children take turns carrying the box together on their shoulders while the group sings or claps. Remind them that the Levites had to follow careful steps, so walk slowly and stay together.

Take-Home Promise Card

You will need index cards, markers, and tape. Have each child write or draw one way they will follow God’s instructions this week, such as helping at home or singing in church. Let them tape the card to a mirror or door so they see it each day and remember to honor God.

Teacher Notes

This chapter shows that worship has both careful obedience and joyful celebration. God cared about how His presence was honored, and the people responded with preparation, unity, and gladness. For adults, it is a reminder that good intentions do not replace following God’s clear word.

Avoid suggesting to children that God is angry or ready to punish them when they make mistakes. The story describes an earlier failure with serious consequences, but the focus of this chapter is on joyful, faithful worship. Keep the emphasis on God’s goodness and the people’s happy response.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for being with us and for giving us clear ways to honor You. Help us to follow Your word carefully and to worship You with joy in our hearts. Teach us to celebrate You every day. Amen.
