In this lesson, children learn that God remembers every family and every person in His story, even the names that are hard to say. The lesson fits ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short story, a few Bible readings, and one activity.
Big Idea
God knows every person by name, and He uses each family to do important work for Him. Nobody is forgotten, and every job in God’s house matters.
Memory Verse
1 Chronicles 6:31
These are they whom David set over the service of song in the LORD’s house, after the ark came to rest there.
(WEB)
Have children stand up and place both hands on their chest while they say the verse together. Then have them raise their arms high for the word “LORD” and sit back down slowly for “rest.” Repeat three times, getting a little faster each time.
The Story: 1 Chronicles 6 for Kids
Long ago, God’s people, the Israelites, had many families. God chose one special family group called the Levites to serve Him in a very special way. Levi had three sons, named Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, and each son became the start of a family. Every family had its own job to do in caring for the house of God.
The family of Kohath was given an important task. Among Kohath’s descendants was a man named Aaron, and God chose Aaron and his sons to be priests. Aaron’s family was the one that offered sacrifices on the altar and made things right between the people and God. Aaron also had a sister named Miriam and a brother named Moses, who led God’s people out of Egypt.
Many years later, King David was ruling Israel. He had a big plan to bring the special box called the ark into a tent in Jerusalem. David chose men from the Levite families to lead the singing and music in worship. These singers did their work with great care, and they kept singing in God’s house until Solomon built a beautiful temple for God in Jerusalem.
The chapter also tells us a long list of names, one generation after another. Some of the names belong to priests, some to singers, and some to Levites who helped with the everyday work of the house of God. Each name was written down so everyone would know that these people belonged to God’s family. A child might say, “Wow, that’s a lot of names!” and you can answer, “Yes, and God knows every single one.”
Thirteen cities were given to the families of Aaron, and other cities were given to the rest of the Levite families. Each family had a home and a place to live, so they could do their work for God close by. God took care of where they lived, too. Nothing about their families was left out of God’s plan.
Finally, the chapter shows how God’s plan reached all the way through hard times, too. Even when the people of Judah were taken away to another land, God still remembered His promises and His families. He never stopped caring for the people who belonged to Him.
Read It Together
1 Chronicles 6:48
Their brothers the Levites were appointed for all the service of the tabernacle of God’s house.
(WEB)
Point out the word “brothers” and ask children who in their life is like a brother or sister in a team. Explain that the Levites each had a job, and every job helped the whole family serve God together.
1 Chronicles 6:49
But Aaron and his sons offered on the altar of burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, for all the work of the most holy place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.
(WEB)
Show children how Aaron and his sons were special helpers who made sure the people could be right with God. Point out that the verse says they did “according to all that Moses had commanded,” which means they followed God’s instructions carefully.
1 Chronicles 6:57
To the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge, Hebron; Libnah also with its suburbs, Jattir, Eshtemoa with its suburbs…
(WEB)
Explain that cities of refuge were places where people could be safe. Remind children that God gives His people safe places, and He cares about where they live and how they are protected.
Talk About It
- What is one job you do at home that helps your family, like setting the table or feeding a pet?
- Why do you think God wanted the Levites to have their own jobs in the temple?
- How does it feel to know that God knows your name?
- What do you think the singers in King David’s time sang about to God?
- How can you help someone in your class or family feel like they belong?
Activity Ideas
Name Banner Craft
You will need construction paper, markers, glue, and a few yarn pieces or craft sticks. Have each child write their own name in big letters on a strip of paper and decorate it with drawings of things they like. Hang the banners together on a string across the room to show that every name belongs to God’s family.
Temple Helpers Game
Set up a few cones or chairs as “stations” around the room, one for each Levite job like singing, carrying, or lighting the lamps. Call out a job, and have children move to that station and act it out with a simple motion, like clapping for singers or walking carefully for carriers. Switch jobs every minute so everyone gets to try several roles.
Take-Home Family Chart
Give each child a sheet of paper with a simple family tree drawn on it, using three or four empty boxes. At home, they can fill in names of family members with a parent’s help, and draw a small picture of one job each person does. Encourage them to share the chart at dinner and thank God together for each person’s job.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God cares about people’s families, jobs, and places of service, not just their big moments. The long genealogies remind us that God keeps careful record of His people across generations, and that faithful service in ordinary roles matters to Him. Even names we struggle to pronounce are known and valued by the Lord.
Avoid overstating to children that every name in the list has a dramatic story. Many of these people are mentioned only once, and the point is that God remembers them, not that each one did something famous. Keep the focus on God’s faithfulness rather than on the details of who begat whom.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You that You know each of us by name. Help us to do our jobs at home, at school, and at church with care, just as the Levites did. Thank You that You remember us and never forget Your family. Amen.
