This lesson teaches children that God wants us to pray for everyone, including leaders, friends, and people we may find hard to love. It works well for children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with time for stories, a short memory verse, and a simple activity.
Big Idea
God hears our prayers, and He wants us to pray for all kinds of people, near and far, because He loves everyone.
Memory Verse
1 Timothy 2:3
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior…
(WEB)
Put one hand on your heart and then open it wide, like you are sending a gift up to God. Say the verse slowly with the motion, and have the children copy you each time you repeat it.
The Story: 1 Timothy 2 for Kids
A long time ago, a man named Paul wrote a letter to his friend Timothy. Timothy was a young leader in a church, and Paul wanted to teach him how to help the people there grow strong in their faith. Paul knew that prayer was one of the most important things a church could do together.
Paul asked the church to pray for everyone. He said they should pray for kings and for all the people who had important jobs in the land. Some of those leaders were not always kind, but Paul still wanted the church to ask God to bless them. Prayer is how we bring our hearts to God.
Paul reminded them that God is good and that He wants all people to be saved and to know the truth. He said there is one God and one Jesus who came to help us find our way back to Him. Paul said, in simple words, that Jesus gave Himself to rescue everyone.
Paul also talked about how people should pray with clean hearts. He said they should lift up their hands without anger and without doubt. He wanted them to talk to God honestly, trusting that He is listening. Good prayer comes from a heart that loves God and loves people.
Paul ended this part of his letter by talking about how we show our faith through the way we live, with kindness and good works. He wanted Timothy and the church to look like people who truly love God every day, not only when they are praying.
Read It Together
1 Timothy 2:1
I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men…
(WEB)
Point out the words “for all men” and ask the children who they think those words include. Help them see that prayer is not only for people they already like.
1 Timothy 2:4
Who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth.
(WEB)
Show the children that God wants everyone to come to know the truth. Explain that this is why we pray for others, because we want them to know God’s love too.
1 Timothy 2:5-6
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all; the testimony in its own times…
(WEB)
Point out that there is one God and one Mediator, Jesus, who gave Himself for all people. Explain that Jesus is the bridge that helps us come near to God, and that He gave His life for everyone.
Talk About It
- Who is one person you could pray for this week, and what would you ask God to do for them?
- Why do you think God wants everyone to know about Him?
- What is something that helps you feel close to God when you pray?
- Can you think of a person who is hard to love, and what might it look like to pray for them?
- How can the way you treat people show that you love God?
Activity Ideas
Prayer Hands Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or colored pencils, and a pencil. Have each child trace one of their hands on the paper. Inside each finger, have them draw or write the name of one person they want to pray for. Talk together about each name as the children finish.
Pray for Your Neighbors Game
You will need a small ball or a folded paper ball. Sit the children in a circle and tell them to pass the ball while the music plays or while you count to ten. When the music stops, the child holding the ball says one person they want to pray for, and the group says, “Lord, hear our prayer.” Keep going until everyone has had a turn.
Prayer Reminder Card
You will need an index card, a pen or markers, and a rubber band or small envelope. Help each child write one name or one simple prayer request on the card. Encourage them to put the card somewhere they will see it at home, like their bedside or the fridge, to remind them to pray each day.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this passage shows that prayer is a responsibility of the whole church, and that God cares about all people, including those in authority. Paul connects prayer with a quiet, godly life and with a desire for everyone to be saved. The chapter also includes teaching about the roles of men and women in the church, which many Christians understand in different ways, so teachers may want to focus on the parts about prayer and God’s love when teaching young children.
With children, avoid overstating the difficult sections about roles in the church. Keep the focus on prayer, God’s desire for everyone to know Him, and the one Mediator who gave Himself for all. Children do not need to understand every detail of the letter to learn that God hears them and loves them.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for hearing our prayers. Help us to pray for our leaders, our families, our friends, and even people who are hard to love. Thank You for loving everyone and for sending Jesus to save us. Help us to show Your love in everything we do. Amen.
