In this lesson, children learn that God’s house was filled with His glory when His people worshiped Him together with song and music. This lesson is for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
When God’s people sing and worship Him together, God shows up in a wonderful way. Our worship makes room for God to be near us.
Memory Verse
2 Chronicles 5:13
When the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD, saying, “For he is good; for his loving kindness endures forever!” then the house was filled with a cloud, even the LORD’s house…

Teach children to hold both hands up high as they sing the words together, then clap softly on “good” and open their arms wide on “forever.” Repeat the motions three times so the verse sticks.
The Story: 2 Chronicles 5 for Kids
King Solomon had worked for many years to build a beautiful house for God in Jerusalem. When the building was finished, he was ready to bring the special box called the ark of the covenant into the house. The ark was the box that held God’s promise, and it had been kept safe for a long time.
Solomon called all the leaders of Israel to come to Jerusalem. The Levites, who helped with the holy work, picked up the ark and carried it carefully. Priests brought in the tent and all the special holy things that were used for worship. Many sheep and cattle were offered as gifts to God, so many that no one could count them.
The priests walked the ark into the innermost room of the house, the most holy place. They set it under the wings of two large statues called cherubim. Those wings spread over the ark like a covering. The poles used to carry the ark were so long that their ends could be seen from the front room, but not from outside. People said they could still see them there, even years later.
Inside the ark there was nothing special except two stone tablets. Those tablets were from long ago, when Moses received God’s words and God made a promise with His people after they left Egypt. Solomon and the people remembered how faithful God had been.
Then came a happy sound. Singers in fine linen, and musicians with cymbals, harps, and trumpets, all started together. They sang, “For He is good; His loving kindness lasts forever!” Their voices and instruments became one sound, rising up to God.
Suddenly a thick cloud filled the house. The priests could not stand to do their work because God’s glory filled His house. God was really there with His people.
Read It Together
2 Chronicles 5:1
Thus all the work that Solomon did for the LORD’s house was finished. Solomon brought in the things that David his father had dedicated, even the silver, the gold, and all the vessels, and put them in the treasuries of God’s house.
(WEB)
Point out that Solomon finished all the work he had been given to do. Ask children what it feels like to finish a big project, and remind them that God helps us finish what He asks us to do.
2 Chronicles 5:7
The priests brought in the ark of the LORD’s covenant to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, to the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubim.
(WEB)
Show children how the priests carefully carried the ark to its special place. Explain that this shows how much the people honored God and treated His holy things with care.
2 Chronicles 5:14
So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud; for the LORD’s glory filled God’s house.
(WEB)
Point to the cloud and talk about how God’s glory filled His house. Tell children that God loves to be with His people, and that is what makes a house of worship special.
Talk About It
- What did the people bring to God’s house, and why do you think they wanted to give it to Him?
- How did the singers and musicians work together to make their sound?
- What do you think the people felt when the cloud filled the house?
- What is one song you like to sing to thank God, and what do you want to say in it?
- How can you show God that you want to worship Him with your whole heart?
Activity Ideas
Paper Ark Drawing
Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons, and markers. Have them draw a box with two small wings on top to show the ark with the cherubim. Encourage them to color the box gold and add a few words that remind them God is good.
Sing and Move Game
Gather the children in a circle and play a song or sing together, using simple instruments like pots and wooden spoons. Let them take turns leading a movement, such as raising their arms or spinning slowly, while everyone sings. End by saying, “God is good, and His love lasts forever.”
Take-Home Thankful Cloud
Give each child a cotton ball or a white paper cloud and a marker. Ask them to write or draw one thing they are thankful to God for, then place it somewhere at home where the family will see it. At dinner, invite each person to share one thing from their cloud.
Teacher Notes
This passage shows that God’s presence is the center of worship, not the building itself. When God’s people honor Him with sincere praise and careful preparation, He draws near to them. Adults can see here a picture of how the whole community joins together to glorify God.
Be careful not to suggest that children must sing perfectly or perform a certain way to make God come near. The story emphasizes unity, gratitude, and God’s faithfulness, and the cloud is God’s gracious action, not a reward for a good performance.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank You for being near to us and for loving us forever. Help us to sing and worship You with our whole hearts, and help us to care for the things that belong to You. Fill our hearts with Your peace and joy. Amen.
