In this lesson, children learn that God hears His people when they pray and turn back to Him. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God hears us when we pray, and He is faithful, good, and worth trusting every single day.
Memory Verse
2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Have children place both hands on their hearts, then slowly fold them as if praying, and then open their arms wide like they are listening. Repeat it together three times while doing the motions.
The Story: 2 Chronicles 7 for Kids
King Solomon had built a beautiful house for God in Jerusalem. After he finished, he stood up in front of all the people and prayed a long, heartfelt prayer. He asked God to hear the prayers of His people whenever they came to that place.
When Solomon finished praying, something amazing happened. Fire came down from heaven and burned up the sacrifices on the altar. God’s glory filled the whole house so brightly that the priests could not even go inside. All the people fell down on their faces on the floor and thanked God, saying, “God is good, and His love lasts forever.”
Then King Solomon and all the people offered many sacrifices to God. There were so many animals that it was a huge celebration. The people joyfully worshiped together and played music and sounded trumpets, and they had a feast that lasted for seven days, and then another seven days after that.
That night, God spoke to Solomon in a dream. God told him, “I have heard your prayer, and I have chosen this place to be My house.” God explained that if His people ever turned away and got lost, but then humbled themselves, prayed, looked for Him, and turned away from their wrong ways, He would hear them from heaven, forgive them, and heal their land.
God also gave Solomon a warning. He said that if Solomon and his people turned away from God and worshiped other gods, bad things would happen. God wanted His people to remember that He was the one who had brought them out of Egypt and kept His promises to them.
Read It Together
2 Chronicles 7:1
Now when Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the LORD’s glory filled the house.
(WEB)
Point out how God answered Solomon’s prayer right away with fire from heaven. Ask children to notice that God showed He was present by filling the house with His glory.
2 Chronicles 7:3
All the children of Israel looked on, when the fire came down, and the LORD’s glory was on the house. They bowed themselves with their faces to the ground on the pavement, worshiped, and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, “For he is good; for his loving kindness endures for ever.”
(WEB)
Show children how the people bowed down and worshiped when they saw God’s glory. Explain that giving thanks and bowing low are ways we can respond to God when we see how good He is.
2 Chronicles 7:16
For now I have chosen and made this house holy, that my name may be there forever; and my eyes and my heart will be there perpetually.
(WEB)
Point out that God said His eyes and heart would be at His house always. Tell children this shows that God really cares about His people and is always near to them.
Talk About It
- What did the people do when they saw the fire and God’s glory filling the house?
- Why do you think God wanted His people to pray to Him in His house?
- What did God promise to do if His people humbled themselves and prayed?
- Can you tell about a time when you prayed and felt God near you?
- What is one way you can show God you love Him this week?
Activity Ideas
Glory Fire Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a big house with a bright light or flame coming down from the sky onto the roof. Let them color the light in yellow and orange to show God’s glory. Talk together about how God’s presence fills His house.
Humble and Turn Relay
You will need a few open spaces and two or three chairs or small cones. Set up a short course where children walk in a straight line, then kneel down to pray, then turn around and walk back. Shout out “Humble!” “Pray!” “Turn!” as they move. Each step reminds children of the actions God asked His people to take.
Prayer Promise Card
You will need index cards, a pen, and a small envelope for each child. Have children write “God hears me when I pray” on one side and draw a simple heart on the other. Encourage them to keep the card in a pocket or on the bedside table. Use it to remember that God is always listening.
Teacher Notes
This chapter shows that the house of God was a place where God promised to hear His people. For adults, it points forward to the way God meets His people through prayer and repentance, and it reminds us that God’s faithfulness does not depend on how perfectly we keep His ways. He is patient, loving, and ready to forgive when we turn back to Him.
When teaching children, avoid implying that bad things happen to people only because they did something wrong or that a healthy relationship with God guarantees good circumstances. Stay with what the text says: God hears, God forgives, and God is faithful, and His promises are real.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, we thank You that You hear us when we pray. Help us to humble ourselves, to seek Your face, and to turn from the things that are wrong. Thank You for being good and for loving us forever. Help us to trust You every day. Amen.
