This lesson teaches children that God knows how to rescue the people who trust and love him, even when false teachers and bad choices surround them. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the verses, and the activity.
Big Idea
God is always able to rescue the people who love him, and he will not forget them. False teachers may lie to people, but God knows the truth and keeps his promises. We can trust him to take care of us.
Memory Verse
2 Peter 2:9
The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment…

Put your hands on your heart when you say the first part, then open your arms wide like you are being rescued. Say the whole verse together three times, adding a big arm wave on the word “rescue” to help children remember it.
The Story: 2 Peter 2 for Kids
Long ago, there were people who pretended to be teachers of God’s truth. But they were not telling the truth at all. They secretly taught wrong ideas, and many people followed them into trouble. Peter wrote a letter to warn God’s family about these false teachers.
Peter reminded everyone that God has never let wrongdoing go unpunished. God did not spare the angels who sinned. He also did not spare the ancient world when people became very wicked, but he saved Noah and his family from the great flood. Noah kept telling people about God’s goodness, and God kept him safe.
God also judged the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because the people there lived in terrible ways. But God rescued a good man named Lot. Lot was very upset by all the evil he saw each day. Lot was like a faithful friend who kept his heart close to God, even while living among people who did not.
Peter said something important here: the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their troubles. Those who do wrong and despise God’s authority will not escape his judgment. God is patient, but he is also fair, and he never forgets his people.
Peter also described a man named Balaam, who wanted money more than he wanted to obey God. God stopped him in a surprising way. His donkey spoke with a human voice to warn him. Even an animal could see that Balaam was headed the wrong way!
Peter ended by saying that false teachers promise freedom but actually make people slaves to bad habits. It is better never to know the right way than to know it and then turn away from it. Peter told his friends to hold on tightly to the truth.
Read It Together
2 Peter 2:1
But false prophets also arose among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.

Point out that some people will try to lead God’s family away from the truth. Ask children how they can tell when someone is telling them something that is not true. Remind them that they can always check what they hear against what God says in the Bible.
2 Peter 2:5-6
5 And didn’t spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood on the world of the ungodly; 6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example to those who would live in an ungodly way…

Show children that God saved Noah and his family, and he judged the wicked cities. Explain that God keeps his promises both to save and to judge. Ask them to notice how God’s care for his people is always part of his story.
Talk About It
- What do you think it means to be rescued, and when might you need rescuing?
- How did God take care of Noah and Lot even when everyone around them was doing wrong?
- Why is it important to learn what the Bible says so we can tell the truth from lies?
- What did the donkey teach us about how God can speak to people in surprising ways?
- How can we keep our hearts close to God when friends or others around us make bad choices?
Activity Ideas
Rescue Ark Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and glue sticks. Ask each child to draw a large boat and fill it with people and animals, as Noah did. Then have them draw waves around the boat and write the word “rescued” on the top. Talk about how God kept Noah safe in the middle of the flood.
Follow the Leader Rescue Game
You will need a blindfold or a scarf and a safe open space. Have one child be the guide and another be the follower with eyes covered. The guide calls out simple directions and keeps the follower safe from bumping into things. Afterward, talk about how God guides and protects us even when we cannot see everything ahead.
Truth Check Bookmark
You will need cardstock, a pencil, scissors, and a marker. Let each child trace and cut a bookmark shape, then write “Check the Truth with God’s Word” on it. Encourage them to take it home and place it in their Bible or storybook. It will remind them to test what they hear against what God says.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter is a warning against false teaching and a comfort that God is faithful to judge sin and rescue his people. Peter uses the examples of angels, Noah, Lot, and Balaam to show that God has always protected the godly and judged the wicked. Believers are urged to stay anchored to the truth rather than be carried away by appealing but empty words.
With children, avoid making the chapter sound frightening or focusing too heavily on punishment. Keep the emphasis on God’s faithfulness and his care for those who trust him. Be gentle when describing judgment, and remind them that God loves them and wants them close to him.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank you that you know how to rescue your people. Help us to listen carefully and to check what we hear against your truth. Keep our hearts close to you, even when it is hard, and help us trust you every day. We love you and we trust you. Amen.
