In this lesson, children learn that Jesus is coming back, that God gives us strength to stand firm and stay close to Him, and that God’s love and comfort are always with us. This lesson works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God loves us, He is always with us, and He helps us stand strong for what is true. When we feel worried or tempted to believe lies, we can hold on to Jesus.
Memory Verse
2 Thessalonians 2:16
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace…
(WEB)
Teach the children to put both hands over their heart when they say “loved us.” Then have them open their arms wide for “good hope.” Repeat it together three times, doing the motions each time.
The Story: 2 Thessalonians 2 for Kids
A man named Paul wrote a letter to the friends in the city of Thessalonica. Some people had been telling the believers a worried story. They said that Jesus had already come back, and the friends were scared they had missed it. Paul wanted them to calm down and think clearly.
Paul reminded them of something important. He had already taught them these things when he was with them. He told them that before Jesus returns, there will be a time when people turn away from God, and a very wicked person will try to take God’s place. Paul said that nothing would happen until the right time came, and God was still in charge of every moment.
Paul also told the friends that God had chosen them and called them to belong to Jesus. Paul said, “Stand firm.” That means, “Don’t let go of what you have been taught, and keep trusting in Jesus, even when it is hard.” Stand strong like a tree with deep roots.
Then Paul prayed for them. He asked God the Father and Jesus Himself to comfort their hearts. Paul knew that their hearts sometimes felt scared or tired, so he asked God to make them strong again.
Paul wanted his friends to remember that God loves them very much. He gives them good hope and comfort that lasts forever. That is something they could hold onto every day.
Read It Together
2 Thessalonians 2:13
But we are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth…
(WEB)
Point out that God chose these believers from the beginning. Ask the children to notice that God’s choice is a gift of love, not something the friends earned. Remind them that God is the one who starts good things in us.
2 Thessalonians 2:15
So then, brothers, stand firm, and hold the traditions which you were taught by us, whether by word, or by letter.
(WEB)
Show the children the word “stand.” Ask them to stand up tall when they hear it. Explain that standing firm means keeping our faith strong and remembering the truth we were taught, even when people say confusing things.
2 Thessalonians 2:17
Comfort your hearts and establish you in every good work and word.
(WEB)
Point out that Paul prays God will comfort our hearts and help us do good things and say good words. Ask the children to think of a time when someone comforted them, and explain that God comforts us in the same loving way.
Talk About It
- What did Paul tell the friends in Thessalonica when they felt worried?
- How can we stand firm and keep trusting Jesus when things feel hard?
- What is one way you have felt God’s comfort in your life?
- Why do you think God chose us to belong to Him?
- What is one good thing you can say or do this week to show that you belong to Jesus?
Activity Ideas
Hearts of Comfort Craft
You will need paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and glue. Have each child trace a heart on paper and cut it out. Ask them to decorate it with words or pictures of ways God comforts them, such as family, friends, or prayer. Hang the hearts in the room as a reminder that God’s comfort is always near.
Stand Firm Game
Clear a space in the room. Call out “Stand firm!” and have the children freeze in a strong standing pose, like a tree. Then call out a silly “wind” word such as “wobble” and let them wiggle, then return to standing tall. Keep playing for a few minutes, reminding them that they can stay strong when things try to shake them.
Good Hope Card to Take Home
You will need index cards, a pencil, and a marker. Write “God loves you and gives you good hope” on one side of each card. Let the children draw a small picture on the other side of something that makes them feel safe. Encourage them to share the card with someone at home and read the message together before bed.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter reminds believers that Jesus will return and that God is still in control of history, even when the future feels uncertain. Paul calls the church to stand firm in the truth they were taught and to rest in God’s love, grace, and comfort. The passage encourages steady faith rather than fear or confusion about end times.
When teaching children, avoid overstating details about the “man of sin” or the timing of Jesus’ return. Keep the focus on God’s love, His faithfulness, and the call to stand firm in trust, since young children need simple, hopeful truths they can understand and remember.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for loving us and for giving us good hope. Help us stand firm and hold on to what is true. Comfort our hearts when we feel scared, and help us do good things and say kind words. We trust You to be with us always. Amen.
