This lesson teaches children that God hears every prayer we pray, even when we feel weak or scared. It is designed for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Use the story of Daniel to show that God answers and strengthens His people.

Big Idea

God hears my prayers, and He gives me strength when I feel afraid. I can always ask Him for help.

Memory Verse

Daniel 10:12

Then he said to me, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel; for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard. I have come for your words’ sake.

Put your hands on your heart when you say “God hears me.” Then lift your hands up high, like you are asking God for help. Do this motion each time you say the verse together.

The Story: Daniel 10 for Kids

Daniel was an old man who lived in the land of Persia. He had served God faithfully for many years. One day God showed Daniel a vision, and it was a big and hard one. Daniel felt very sad about it.

For three whole weeks Daniel prayed and fasted. He did not eat fancy food or drink wine. He kept asking God to help him understand what the vision meant. God was listening the whole time.

One day Daniel stood by a great river. He looked up and saw a man dressed in shining linen. The man’s face was bright like lightning, and his voice sounded like a crowd. Daniel was so scared that he fell down on the ground.

The man touched Daniel and helped him stand up. He said, “Daniel, do not be afraid. God heard your words from the very first day you prayed.” Daniel felt strong again, and he listened carefully to what the man had to say.

The man explained that he had come to answer Daniel’s prayer. He told Daniel that a big battle was happening in the spiritual world, and that the angel Michael had come to help. God was still in control, and His plans were still good.

Read It Together

Daniel 10:11

He said to me, Daniel, you greatly beloved man, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright; for I have been sent to you, now. When he had spoken this word to me, I stood trembling.

(WEB)

Point out that God called Daniel “greatly beloved.” Ask children how it feels to know that God loves them that much. Explain that this is true for every child in the room.

Daniel 10:19

He said, “Greatly beloved man, don’t be afraid. Peace be to you. Be strong. Yes, be strong.” When he spoke to me, I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak; for you have strengthened me.”

(WEB)

Show children the words “be strong.” Explain that God gave Daniel courage when he was tired and afraid. Ask them to think of a time they needed courage.

Daniel 10:8-9

8 So I was left alone, and saw this great vision. No strength remained in me; for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. 9 Yet I heard the voice of his words. When I heard the voice of his words, then I fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face toward the ground.

(WEB)

Explain that Daniel felt weak and fell to the ground when he saw the vision. Remind children that it is okay to feel small and scared, and that God still cares for us in those moments.

Talk About It

  • What did Daniel do when he felt sad and worried about the vision?
  • How did God answer Daniel’s prayers, even though Daniel did not see God’s face?
  • What helped Daniel feel strong again after he was scared?
  • When is a time you felt scared, and what could you pray about it?
  • How can you remember that God is always listening to you?

Activity Ideas

Draw the River Scene

Give each child a piece of paper, crayons, and a pencil. Ask them to draw Daniel standing by the great river and the bright man in linen. Encourage them to add colors that show light and calm water. Let them explain their drawing to the group.

Ear Listening Game

Choose one child to be God and sit in a chair at the front. Other children take turns whispering a short prayer from across the room. When the whisper ends, the child who is God gives a thumbs up to show they heard. Talk about how God always hears, even quiet prayers.

Prayer Reminder Card

Give each child an index card and a marker. Ask them to write “God hears me” on one side and draw a small heart on the other. Suggest they keep the card in a pocket or backpack. Encourage them to pull it out and pray whenever they feel scared during the week.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this passage shows that God responds to prayer even when the answer comes in ways we do not expect. Daniel’s prayer was heard from the first day, yet the answer arrived after three weeks. God’s timing and plans are always good, even when we do not understand the reasons behind them.

When teaching children, avoid suggesting that prayers will always be answered immediately or in the exact way we hope. Instead, focus on the truth that God hears us and gives us strength to keep trusting Him, even when the waiting feels long.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You that You hear every prayer we pray. Help us to be brave like Daniel when we feel scared or tired. Give us strength to trust You, even when we do not understand everything. We love You and know You are always with us. Amen.
