In this lesson, children learn that God knows everything, even the dreams of a king, and that He can be trusted with the things we cannot see. Kids aged 5 to 11 can enjoy this story, and the lesson takes about 20 to 30 minutes from start to finish.

Big Idea

God knows all things, and He is the one who shows us what is hidden. Daniel prayed to God, and God helped him.

Memory Verse

Daniel 2:22

He reveals the deep and secret things. He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.

Ask the children to cup their hands over their eyes like a mask, then slowly open their fingers as they say the verse. Explain that God sees into the dark places and knows what is hidden, and the light is always with Him.

The Story: Daniel 2 for Kids

One night, King Nebuchadnezzar had a strange dream. When he woke up, he could not remember it, and it made him feel very worried. He called all his wise men, the magicians and enchanters, and he said, “Tell me my dream and what it means!”

The wise men were frightened. They said, “O king, tell us your dream, and we will explain it to you.” But the king was angry. He said, “You are only trying to buy time. Tell me the dream first, or you will all be in trouble.” The wise men could not do it, and the king became furious. He gave a command that all the wise men of Babylon must be put to death.

Daniel and his three friends, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, were also in danger, because they were among the wise men. Daniel was calm and kind. He went to the king and asked for a little time. Then he went home and told his friends to pray to God and ask Him for help.

That night, God showed Daniel the dream and what it meant. Daniel was so thankful that he praised God. He said, “Blessed be the name of God forever, for wisdom and power belong to Him.” Daniel knew that God is the one who reveals secrets.

Daniel went before the king and said, “No wise man can tell you your dream, but there is a God in heaven who knows all secrets.” Then Daniel told the king about a great statue with a head of gold, a chest of silver, and feet partly of iron and partly of clay. A stone came down and broke the statue to pieces, and the stone grew into a huge mountain.

The king fell on his face in front of Daniel. He said, “Your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, because He can reveal secrets.” The king made Daniel a great leader in Babylon, and God was honored.

Read It Together

Daniel 2:20-21

20 Daniel answered, “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and might are his. 21 He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings, and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding.

(WEB)

Point out that Daniel began by praising God before he told the king anything. Show the children that God is the one who gives wisdom and changes times, and that Daniel trusted Him fully.

Daniel 2:27-28

27 Daniel answered before the king, and said, “The secret which the king has demanded can’t be shown to the king by wise men, enchanters, magicians, or soothsayers; 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head on your bed, are these…

(WEB)

Help the children see that Daniel was honest with the king. He made it clear that the wisdom came from God and not from himself, so God received the glory for the answer.

Daniel 2:44

“In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, nor will its sovereignty be left to another people; but it will break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever.

(WEB)

Explain that the stone represents a kingdom that God will set up forever. Tell the children that God’s kingdom will never be destroyed, so they can trust Him for always.

Talk About It

  • What did Daniel do when he was in trouble, and why do you think he chose to pray?
  • How do you think Daniel felt when God answered his prayer?
  • Why is it good to know that God can see things we cannot see?
  • What would you have said to the king if you were Daniel?
  • How can you show God that you trust Him when you feel scared?

Activity Ideas

Draw the Statue

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw Daniel’s great statue with a gold head, silver chest, bronze belly, iron legs, and feet of iron and clay. Then have them draw the small stone that broke it and grew into a mountain. Talk about how God’s kingdom is stronger than anything in the world.

Stone Mountain Game

Gather a few small rocks or balls of crumpled paper and a box. Stand the children in a line and have them toss the stone toward a tower made of cups or blocks. Each time one falls, remind the children that God’s kingdom will never fall. Let them cheer for God.

Take-Home Prayer Card

You will need an index card, a marker, and a small piece of tape. Write “God knows all secrets” on the card and ask the child to decorate it. Tape it to the bedroom door or the fridge. Encourage the family to read it together at dinner and thank God for knowing and caring about each of them.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God alone reveals what is hidden and that human wisdom has limits. Daniel does not take credit for his insight, and he points the king to the God of heaven. The story also presents God’s kingdom as eternal, which gives believers hope in a world where earthly rulers come and go.

With children, avoid overstating how the statue’s four kingdoms match specific historical empires, since the text does not name them and scholars often debate the details. Keep the focus on God being all-knowing, faithful, and in control of history.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You that You know everything, even the things we cannot see. Thank You for helping Daniel when he was scared, and help us trust You when we feel worried too. Thank You that Your kingdom will last forever. Amen.
