This lesson teaches children that God is near, and that when we turn back to Him with our whole hearts, He welcomes us home. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the reading, and the activity.
Big Idea
God is close to us, and when we turn back to Him and love Him with all our hearts, He brings us home and gives us a good life.
Memory Verse
Deuteronomy 30:14
But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.

Put one hand on your heart and the other on your mouth as you say the verse slowly. Then point up to the sky and bring your hands back down together. Have the children repeat the motions until they can say the verse without looking.
The Story: Deuteronomy 30 for Kids
Moses was speaking to the people of Israel just before they would enter the Promised Land. He had told them about God’s blessings and the choices they would face. Some of them would be scattered far away from home, because they had not always listened to God.
Moses told the people that if they ever got lost or far from home, they could come back. He said, “Turn back to the LORD your God with all your heart.” God would not forget them. He would gather them up from every place they had been sent, even if they were as far away as the edge of the sky.
Moses wanted the people to know something important. God’s instructions were not hidden away somewhere far off. He said, “The word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart.” They did not have to go searching across the sea or up into heaven to find God’s ways. God had already placed them right in front of them.
Then Moses gave them a choice. He told them that they could choose life and blessing, or they could choose death and trouble. He asked them to choose life by loving God, listening to His voice, and holding tightly to Him. Moses wanted them to know that God Himself was their life.
Read It Together
Deuteronomy 30:1-3
1 It shall happen, when all these things have come on you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you shall call them to mind among all the nations, where the LORD your God has driven you, 2 and return to the LORD your God, and obey his voice according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul; 3 that then the LORD your God will release you from captivity, have compassion on you, and will return and gather you from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you.

Point out that God does not give up on His people even when they wander away. Ask the children to find the words that show God gathering His people back home. Explain that “return” means turning around and walking back toward God.
Deuteronomy 30:11-14
11 For this commandment which I command you today is not too hard for you or too distant. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up for us to heaven, and bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?” 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who will go over the sea for us, and bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?” 14 But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.

Show the children that God’s instructions are not too hard or too far away. Point out the phrase “in your mouth and in your heart” and ask how we can keep God’s words close by speaking them and thinking about them. Keep the focus on God being near rather than on rules.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20
19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your descendants; 20 to love the LORD your God, to obey his voice, and to cling to him; for he is your life, and the length of your days; that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
(WEB)
Explain that God gives people a choice, and He asks them to choose life by loving Him. Point out that the verse says God Himself is our life. Help the children see that choosing God is choosing the best way to live.
Talk About It
- What does it mean to turn back to God with your whole heart?
- Where do you think God’s words are when we keep them in our hearts and mouths?
- Why do you think God wants to bring His people home when they wander away?
- What are some ways we can choose life and love God every day?
- How can you remember that God is close to you, even when you feel far away?
Activity Ideas
Heart Path Craft
Give each child a sheet of construction paper, crayons, and a cutout heart. Have them draw a winding path from the edge of the paper toward a big heart in the middle, labeled “God.” As they draw, talk about how God welcomes us back from any distance. Let them glue the heart at the end of their path and take it home.
Follow the Leader Home
Mark a start line and a home base with masking tape or two chairs. One child is the leader and walks away from home, taking big steps and wiggling around. Then the leader turns around and calls, “Come back home!” The others walk or hop back to base together. Switch leaders so everyone gets a turn to be the one who comes back.
Choose Life Card
Cut index cards in half and write one simple way to choose life on each card, such as “Be kind,” “Pray,” or “Help at home.” Put them in a small envelope and tape it to the fridge. Each day, have your child pick one card and try to do that action. Talk together at dinner about how it went.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God’s love stays steady even when people drift away, and that He invites them back with open arms. Moses reminds the people that God’s ways are not out of reach, because God has placed His word close enough to be spoken and lived out. The choice between life and death is really a choice about whether we will love and trust God wholeheartedly.
Avoid overstating to children that they can always get things right on their own. The chapter stresses that God is the one who gathers, forgives, and changes hearts, so the emphasis should stay on God’s faithfulness rather than on the children’s performance.
A Prayer to Close
Lord God, thank You for being near to us and for never giving up on us. Help us turn back to You with all our hearts when we wander away. Teach us to choose life by loving You, listening to You, and holding on to You each day. Thank You that You are our life. Amen.
