This lesson teaches children that God is faithful and can always be trusted, even when we forget Him. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the memory verse, and the activity.
Big Idea
God is our Rock. He always keeps His promises and always takes care of His people, even when we wander away from Him.
Memory Verse
Deuteronomy 32:4
The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. A God of faithfulness who does no wrong, just and right is he.
(WEB)
Have the children put both fists together in front of their chest, then slowly spread their arms wide, like a big solid rock that stays steady. Say “Rock” each time the word appears, and let them hold the pose on “faithfulness.”
The Story: Deuteronomy 32 for Kids
Moses was an old man, and he knew his time to leave the people was coming soon. God had led the people of Israel out of Egypt and through the wilderness for many years. Now they stood near the land God had promised them. Moses gathered everyone together to sing a special song, so they would never forget what God had done for them.
In the song, Moses told them that God found them in a dry, empty desert. God protected them like an eagle protects her babies. He gave them food and water even in the wilderness. Moses reminded them that God did all of this alone, and no other god helped Him.
But the people did not always remember. As they grew comfortable and full of good food, some of them forgot about God. They began worshiping idols, which hurt God’s heart. Moses warned them that turning away from God would bring sadness and trouble. He said, “Remember the days of old,” so they would look back and see how faithful God had been.
Even though the people had turned away, God never stopped loving them. Moses sang that God would one day defend His people and bring them comfort. God is strong, and no one can take His people out of His hand. God is the Rock who never changes, even when His people change.
Then God told Moses that Moses would see the land of promise from a mountain, but he would not walk into it. Moses had made a mistake at a place called Meribah, and God wanted him to know the consequences. Moses went up the mountain and saw the land from far away, just as God had said.
Read It Together
Deuteronomy 32:3
For I will proclaim the LORD’s name. Ascribe greatness to our God!
(WEB)
Point out that Moses wanted everyone to say how great God is. Ask the children to shout together, “Our God is great!” Explain that praising God helps us remember who He is.
Deuteronomy 32:10-11
10 He found him in a desert land, in the waste howling wilderness. He surrounded him. He cared for him. He kept him as the apple of his eye. 11 As an eagle that stirs up her nest, that flutters over her young, he spread abroad his wings, he took them, he bore them on his feathers.
(WEB)
Show the children a picture of an eagle if you have one. Explain that God took care of His people like a mother eagle who guards her nest. Ask them how it feels to know someone is watching over them.
Deuteronomy 32:18
Of the Rock who became your father, you are unmindful, and have forgotten God who gave you birth.
(WEB)
Point out that the people forgot the God who made them. Talk about how we can forget God too, especially when life feels easy. Remind the children that God never forgets us, even when we forget Him.
Talk About It
- What did God do to take care of His people in the wilderness?
- Why do you think the people forgot about God when they had plenty to eat?
- How is God like a rock? What does a rock do that helps us?
- What is one way you can remember God’s kindness this week?
- Why is it good to know that God never changes?
Activity Ideas
Paper Plate Eagle
You will need a paper plate, brown and white paper, markers, glue, and scissors. Have the children draw an eagle on the paper plate, using the brown paper for wings and the white paper for the head. Talk about how the eagle protects its young while they learn. As they work, remind them that God protects us in the same loving way.
Rock Steady Game
You will need a open space and a few small stones or pillows. Have the children stand like a rock, feet planted and arms crossed. Call out different movements, like hopping or spinning, and the children must stay steady like a rock. End by saying, “God is our steady Rock,” and let everyone cheer.
Take-Home Memory Card
You will need index cards, a pencil, and crayons. Write Deuteronomy 32:4 on one side of the card, and let the children decorate the other side with a rock or a cross. Encourage them to take the card home and read it to someone in their family. Ask them to share one thing they learned about God’s faithfulness.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter is a song of Moses that recalls God’s faithfulness to Israel and warns against forgetting Him. It shows that God’s justice and mercy work together, and that He remains committed to His people even through their failures. The passage also reminds us that God’s leadership is personal and sure.
With children, avoid overstating the harsh judgment in the chapter. Focus on God’s love, faithfulness, and care rather than the warnings of punishment. Keep the emphasis on the simple truth that God is our Rock, and let older children explore the deeper themes at their own pace.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for being our Rock that never moves. Help us remember all the good things You have done for us. When we forget You, please help us come back to You. Thank You for always taking care of us. Amen.
