This lesson teaches children one truth they can repeat: we are made right with God because of Jesus, not because of rules we keep. It suits children aged about 5 to 11 and takes 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the reading, and the activity.

Big Idea

Jesus is the reason we belong to God. Nobody earns God’s love, and Jesus makes friends of everyone who trusts him.

Memory Verse

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

(WEB)

Put both hands on your heart when you say “I live by faith in the Son of God.” Then open your arms wide on “who loved me.” The motion helps children link the words with Jesus’s love for each one of them.

The Story: Galatians 2 for Kids

Paul was a good friend of a man named Barnabas, and they traveled together to tell people about Jesus. After many years, they went to Jerusalem to talk with the leaders there. Paul took a young friend named Titus along too. The leaders agreed that Paul should tell the good news to people who were not Jewish, and Titus was one of them.

Some men came in who wanted everyone to follow all the old rules before they could be God’s friends. Paul did not agree. He wanted people to know that they did not have to earn God’s love. Paul stood firm so the good news would stay clear for everyone.

Later, Peter came to a town called Antioch. At first Peter ate meals with people who were not Jewish, which was fine. Then some other men arrived, and Peter stopped eating with them because he was afraid of what those men would think. Even Barnabas followed Peter’s example.

Paul saw what was happening and spoke up. He looked at Peter and said, “We are made right with God through faith in Jesus, not by keeping rules.” Paul knew that no one can be made right by their own efforts. Only Jesus can make us right.

Paul told the others that he had died to the old way of trying to earn God’s favor. Now he lived because Jesus lives in him. Paul trusted the Son of God, who loved him and gave himself for him. Paul did not want to throw away this gift of grace.

Read It Together

Galatians 2:16

Yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.

(WEB)

Point out the words “not by the works of the law” and “through faith in Jesus Christ.” Ask children to notice that the verse names two ways of trying to be right with God, and only one of them works. Help them see that faith means trusting Jesus, not doing enough good things.

Galatians 2:9

And when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision.

(WEB)

Show children the phrase “the right hand of fellowship,” which means the leaders welcomed Paul and Barnabas as partners. Explain that God’s family includes people from many places and backgrounds. Point out that everyone was given a job to do in sharing the good news.

Galatians 2:21

I don’t reject the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!”

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and explain that God’s grace is a free gift. Tell children that if we could be made right by following rules alone, Jesus would not have needed to die. Help them see that Jesus’s death shows how much he values us.

Talk About It

  • What did Peter do that Paul thought was wrong, and why do you think Peter felt scared?
  • How can we show our friends that Jesus accepts everyone, just as they are?
  • Why is it good news that we cannot earn God’s love by ourselves?
  • What does it mean that Jesus “lives in me” when we trust him?
  • When have you felt afraid to do the right thing, and how did you feel afterward?

Activity Ideas

Handprint Heart Card

You will need paper, crayons, glue, and scissors. Have each child trace their hand on colored paper and cut it out. Glue the handprints in a heart shape on a card, then write or draw “Jesus loves me” in the center. Children can take the card home to remind them that Jesus welcomes them.

Red Light, Green Light Faith

Play a version of Red Light, Green Light where “green” means you are trusting Jesus and can move forward, and “red” means you stop and remember you cannot earn God’s love by yourself. No materials are needed beyond an open space. Pause the game often so children learn to listen for the word that tells them how to move.

Take-Home Friendship Bracelet

You will need pipe cleaners or string and a few beads. Give each child a pipe cleaner and some beads in two colors. As they add the beads, talk about how Jesus brings different people together into one family. Tie the ends so children can wear it and talk about it with family at home.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that the good news of Jesus is for everyone, and that no one earns their place with God through rules or background. Paul’s stand against requiring Gentiles to follow every Jewish custom protected the free grace that comes through faith. The chapter also shows that even faithful leaders can slip into fear, and that honest correction among believers is a form of love.

Avoid overstating the conflict to children. Keep the focus on Peter’s fear and Paul’s courage, not on painting anyone as a villain. Children should leave understanding that Jesus makes us right with God, and that his grace is a gift we receive by trusting him.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Jesus, thank you that we are made right with God because of you. Help us trust you and not try to earn your love. Please help us to be kind and welcoming to everyone, just as you are. Amen.
