This lesson teaches children that God always welcomes His people back when they turn away from sin and return to Him. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short activity.
Big Idea
God is kind and loving, and when we say sorry and come back to Him, He forgives us and helps us grow strong and beautiful.
Memory Verse
Hosea 14:4
“I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for my anger is turned away from him.
(WEB)
Hold your hands out in front of you, palms up, like you are receiving a gift. Then slowly bring them together over your heart, as if you are hugging God’s love close. Say the word “freely” with your hands open wide.
The Story: Hosea 14 for Kids
Long ago, the people of Israel had wandered far away from God. They had made idols out of wood and stone and bowed down to them instead of to the true Lord. Their hearts had gone cold, and their choices had hurt them and hurt the people around them.
God sent the prophet Hosea to speak to His people with a message of hope. Hosea told them to turn back to God. He told them to bring their words to the Lord and say, “Please forgive all our sins and receive us kindly.” The people were to promise they would no longer trust in other nations or in the things their own hands had made.
God answered them with a promise that made the whole story shine. He said, “I will heal their hearts that wander, and I will love them freely.” God’s anger was no longer aimed at them. He was ready to welcome them home with open arms.
God compared Himself to the cool morning dew that makes flowers bloom. He said Israel would grow like a lily, strong like the tall trees of Lebanon, and beautiful like an olive tree. Their branches would spread wide, and people would rest in their shade. Their life would be fresh and full, like a garden after the rain.
At the very end, the chapter asks a wise question. Who is wise enough to understand these things? The answer is that the ways of the Lord are right, and the people who walk with Him stay steady. Those who turn away from Him stumble along the way.
Read It Together
Hosea 14:1-2
1 Israel, return to the LORD your God; for you have fallen because of your sin. 2 Take words with you, and return to the LORD. Tell him, “Forgive all our sins, and accept that which is good: so we offer our lips like bulls.
(WEB)
Point out that God calls His people to come back to Him. Ask the children what it feels like to say sorry and how it feels when someone says sorry to them.
Hosea 14:5
I will be like the dew to Israel. He will blossom like the lily, and send down his roots like Lebanon.
(WEB)
Show the children that God describes Himself as refreshing dew. Explain that dew falls softly in the night and helps flowers grow, just as God’s love helps us grow.
Hosea 14:9
Who is wise, that he may understand these things? Who is prudent, that he may know them? For the ways of the LORD are right, and the righteous walk in them; But the rebellious stumble in them.
(WEB)
Point out the difference between the righteous, who walk in God’s ways, and the rebellious, who stumble. Help children see that following God’s path keeps us steady and safe.
Talk About It
- What did the people of Israel need to do to come back to God?
- How do you think God felt when His people came home to Him?
- What are some things that can pull our hearts away from God?
- How does it feel to know God forgives us when we say sorry?
- What is one way you can walk closely with God this week?
Activity Ideas
Dew Drop Flower Craft
You will need construction paper, crayons or markers, glue, and cotton balls. Have each child draw a large flower with a green stem on the paper. Then glue small cotton balls around the petals to look like dew drops. As the children work, remind them that God’s love refreshes us like dew refreshes a garden.
Walk Back Home Game
Set up a path of chairs or pillows in a room, with a “home base” at one end. Have one child start at the far end and walk slowly toward home, while the others cheer them on. Explain that God is always cheering us back to Him. Let each child take a turn so everyone feels welcomed home.
Olive Branch Reminder
You will need a small paper plate, green paper, and a marker. Trace a hand on the green paper, cut out the shape, and tape it to the plate as a branch. Write “God welcomes me home” on the plate. Take it home and place it on the kitchen table or bedroom shelf to remember that God always welcomes us back.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Hosea 14 is a call to repentance and a picture of God’s restoring love. Israel had been unfaithful, yet God promises healing, forgiveness, and renewal. The chapter reminds us that turning back to God is always possible and that His mercy is more generous than our failures.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the details of the imagery, such as the exact meaning of each plant or tree. Keep the focus on the simple truth that God is loving, forgiving, and ready to welcome His children home.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Lord, thank You for loving us even when we wander away from You. Help us say sorry when we do wrong, and help us come back to You with open hearts. Thank You that You forgive us and help us grow. Help us walk in Your ways every day. Amen.
