This lesson teaches children that God wants His people to know Him and to live honestly and kindly, because forgetting Him leads to trouble for everyone. It is written for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God wants us to know Him, tell the truth, and treat others well. When we forget Him, our choices hurt ourselves and the people around us.

Memory Verse

Hosea 4:6

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to me. Because you have forgotten your God’s law, I will also forget your children.

(WEB)

Have children cup their hands in front of their faces like they are holding a book, then open their hands wide as if they are sharing what they learned. Say “knowledge” together as you open them.

The Story: Hosea 4 for Kids

God sent a prophet named Hosea to speak to the people of Israel. God had a serious message for them, so Hosea told them to listen carefully. God was sad because the people had stopped living the way He wanted. Hardly anyone told the truth, and hardly anyone was kind or fair.

People were doing many wrong things. They were cursing, lying, stealing, and hurting one another. Some were even being unfaithful to God and to their families. The land itself seemed to suffer because of all this wrongdoing. Hosea explained that when people choose to do wrong, everyone around them feels the sadness of it.

The priests, who were supposed to teach God’s ways, had also turned away from Him. Hosea said that the people were like the priests, and the priests were like the people. Both had forgotten God’s law. God said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” They did not know God well, and so they did not follow Him.

Some of the people went to wooden idols to ask for help, as if a stick or a statue could answer them. Hosea warned that these false gods could never really help anyone. God wanted His people to come back to Him and trust Him alone.

Even with all this sadness, God did not stop loving His people. The chapter reminds us that God is always ready for us to return to Him, and that He wants us to know Him truly.

Read It Together

Hosea 4:1

Hear the LORD’s word, you children of Israel; for the LORD has a charge against the inhabitants of the land: “Indeed there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land.

(WEB)

Point out that God’s message begins with “Hear the LORD’s word.” Ask children what it means to really listen, and help them see that God speaks to us through His Word.

Hosea 4:2

There is cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break boundaries, and bloodshed causes bloodshed.

(WEB)

Show children the list of wrong actions in this verse, such as lying and stealing. Explain that God notices these choices and that they hurt other people.

Hosea 4:13

They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains, and burn incense on the hills, under oaks and poplars and terebinths, because its shade is good. Therefore your daughters play the prostitute, and your brides commit adultery.

(WEB)

Help children understand that the people had gone to worship things that could not save them. Point out how easily we can start trusting things that cannot truly help us, and encourage them to keep their hearts close to God.

Talk About It

  • What are some ways we can get to know God better during the week?
  • Why do you think lying and stealing hurt the whole community, not just one person?
  • What helps you choose to tell the truth even when it is hard?
  • How can we show kindness to someone who has made a mistake?
  • What is one thing you can do this week to listen to God’s word?

Activity Ideas

Open Book Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw an open book on their paper and write or draw one thing they know about God inside it. Let them share their picture with the group. This helps children see that knowing God is something they can carry with them every day.

Truth Tag Game

You will need an open space, such as a hallway or gym. Choose one child to be “it.” Explain that they must tag others, but they can only tag someone while telling a true statement about God, like “God loves me.” Change roles after a few rounds. This game helps children practice speaking truthfully and remembering God’s goodness.

Take-Home Promise Card

You will need index cards, a marker, and a hole punch with yarn. Have each child write “I will know God and tell the truth” on one side of a card and decorate it. Punch a hole in the corner and tie on yarn so they can hang it on a bedroom door or mirror. Encourage families to read it together during the week.

Teacher Notes

Hosea 4 shows that when people forget God, their lives and communities suffer from dishonesty, unkindness, and broken relationships. The chapter is also a call back to God, who longs for His people to know Him truly. Adults can see that knowing God shapes how we treat others and how we live in every area of life.

Avoid overstating the harsh details of the chapter to children. Keep the focus on God’s desire for His people to know Him and on His patient love, rather than on the punishments described, which can frighten young hearts.

A Prayer to Close

Father, thank You for speaking to us and for wanting us to know You. Help us to tell the truth, to be kind to others, and to keep our hearts close to You. Teach us Your ways each day, so that we can live the way You want. Amen.
