This lesson teaches children that God is the one who rules over all nations, and one day He will bring peace so that people will no longer learn to make war. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God is in charge of the whole world, and He wants everyone to learn His ways so we can live together in peace.
Memory Verse
Isaiah 2:4
He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Hold your hands out in front of you like you are holding a sword, then slowly turn your palms up and open them wide, like a plow being made gentle. Do this motion together twice while you say the verse, and children will remember it.
The Story: Isaiah 2 for Kids
A long time ago, a man named Isaiah was a prophet. God showed him a picture of the future about the city of Jerusalem and the mountain where God’s house would stand. Isaiah saw that this mountain would be higher than all the other hills around it.
In his vision, people from many nations would walk up that mountain together. They would say, “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the LORD, so He can teach us His ways.” Isaiah told them that God would judge between the nations and settle their arguments fairly.
Isaiah also saw a sad problem among God’s own people. Many of them had filled their land with silver, gold, horses, and idols that they had made with their own hands. They were trusting in things they had built instead of trusting in God.
Isaiah reminded everyone that proud people will one day be made low, but the LORD alone will be lifted up. He told the people to hide in the rocks from the power of God’s glory, and to stop trusting in people who are only breathing, because they cannot save anyone. Isaiah’s message was a warning and a hope.
Read It Together
Isaiah 2:2
It shall happen in the latter days, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.
(WEB)
Point out that the mountain of the LORD’s house will be raised up above all the other hills. Ask the children what it means for God to be the highest, and remind them that all nations will come to Him.
Isaiah 2:3
Many peoples shall go and say, “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For out of Zion the law shall go out, and the LORD’s word from Jerusalem.
(WEB)
Show the children how the people say, “Come, let’s go,” which means they want to learn from God together. Explain that God teaches us His ways, and we can walk in His paths every day.
Isaiah 2:5
House of Jacob, come, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.
(WEB)
Point out the word “light” and explain that walking in the light of the LORD means following Him so we can see where we are going. Invite the children to name one way they can walk in God’s light this week.
Talk About It
- What do you think it would look like if people stopped fighting and started helping each other?
- Why do you think Isaiah said the people should not trust in the things they made with their own hands?
- How can we learn God’s ways when we read the Bible at home?
- What is one thing that makes you feel small, and how does it help to remember that God is big and strong?
- Who is someone you could invite to come learn about God with you?
Activity Ideas
Plowshare Drawing
Give each child a sheet of paper and crayons or markers. Ask them to draw a sword on one side and a plow or garden tool on the other, then color the sword in and turn it into a plow with a few drawn lines. Talk about how God can change hard things into helpful things.
Mountain Walk Game
Clear a space in the room and place a few pillows or chairs as hills. Have the children walk slowly from one side to the other, saying “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the LORD.” Each time they arrive at the top, ask a question about God’s ways and let them answer before walking again.
Take-Home Rock Reminder
Give each child a smooth rock or a small stone and a marker. Let them write the word “God” or draw a small mountain on the rock. Ask them to keep it on a windowsill or in a pocket as a reminder that God is higher than everything else and that they can walk in His light every day.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Isaiah 2 paints a picture of God’s kingdom being lifted up above all human pride and power. It points forward to a time when God will teach all nations and bring a peace that people cannot make on their own. It also warns that trusting in wealth, military strength, or handmade idols will always fall short of trusting God Himself.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the details of the future mountain or the timeline of the last days. Keep the focus on God’s power, His kindness in teaching us, and the call to trust Him instead of things we can see.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank You that You are higher than all the mountains and stronger than every army. Teach us Your ways, help us walk in Your light, and help us trust You more than anything else we can see. Give us hearts that want peace with everyone. Amen.
