This lesson teaches children that God is with them, so they do not need to be afraid. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach, including the story, the verses, and one activity.
Big Idea
God says, “Don’t be afraid, I am with you, and I will help you.” When we feel scared, we can remember that God is always close and always ready to help us.
Memory Verse
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
Have the children stand up and place both hands on their chests when they say “Don’t be afraid.” Then they open their arms wide to show God holding them. Say the verse together three times, doing the motions each time.
The Story: Isaiah 41 for Kids
Long ago, God spoke through a prophet named Isaiah. God wanted His people to know something important. The people of Israel were His servants, and God had chosen them. He had called them from far away places, and He had never thrown them away.
Some of the people felt small and worried. Other nations seemed strong, and the people of Israel wondered if they would be safe. God spoke to them gently. He said, “You are my servant. I have chosen you and I have not cast you away.”
God did not leave them to fend for themselves. He promised to strengthen them and to hold their right hand. He told them that anyone who fought against them would be disappointed and would fade away like nothing. God made His promises clear so His people could trust Him.
God also reminded them that He is the One who made everything and who knows what will happen. He said that He would bring water to dry places and grow trees where there had been only desert. His people could look at these things and know that God was doing them. God said, “Don’t be afraid. I will help you.”
Read It Together
Isaiah 41:13
For I, the LORD your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I will help you.’
(WEB)
Point out that God says He will hold our right hand. Ask the children to picture someone holding their hand as they cross a busy street. Explain that this is how God says He stays close to us when we are afraid.
Isaiah 41:17
The poor and needy seek water, and there is none. Their tongue fails for thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them. I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
(WEB)
Point out that God hears the poor and needy when they cry out for water. Explain that God notices when people are thirsty or in need, and He promises to answer them. Ask the children to think of a time when they asked someone for help and got it.
Isaiah 41:18
I will open rivers on the bare heights, and springs in the middle of the valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.
(WEB)
Point out that God can make rivers flow in a dry desert. Explain that nothing is too hard for God. Show the children that God can bring life and water even in the most empty places.
Talk About It
- What is something that makes you feel scared sometimes?
- How did God tell His people not to be afraid in this story?
- What does it mean that God holds our hand?
- Who is someone you can ask for help when you feel scared?
- How can you remind yourself that God is with you when you feel worried?
Activity Ideas
Hand Print Reminder Craft
You will need construction paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Have each child trace their hand on the paper and cut it out. On the palm, have them write or draw “God holds my hand.” Hang the hands on the wall or let the children take them home as a reminder that God is always close.
Follow the Leader Movement Game
Clear a space in the room. Have one child be the leader and walk slowly while the others follow. Every few steps, the leader stops and says, “Don’t be afraid, I will help you.” The others reach out and hold the hand of the person next to them. Switch leaders several times so every child has a turn.
Desert to Garden Take Home Card
You will need a small paper plate, cotton balls, green paper, and glue. Have each child glue green paper shapes on one half of the plate to show a garden, and leave the other half blank for a dry desert. Talk about how God can bring life to dry places. Let the children take the plate home and tell their family the verse from the lesson.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God is faithful to His people even when they feel weak or afraid. Isaiah speaks to people who felt forgotten, and God reminds them that He chose them and remains with them. The chapter also shows that God is the Creator and the one who acts in history, so His promises can be trusted.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the idea that God will always remove every difficulty from their lives. The point is that God is with them and will help them, not that they will never face hard things. Keep the focus on God’s presence and care.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You that You are with us and that we do not have to be afraid. Thank You for holding our hand and helping us when we feel small. Help us remember that You are always close to us. Amen.
