This lesson teaches children that God never forgets them, even when they feel alone or forgotten. Isaiah 49 is best for children ages 5 to 11, and the full lesson takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God remembers you. He has written your name on his hands, and he never forgets his children, even when they feel lost.

Memory Verse

Isaiah 49:16

Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. your walls are continually before me.

(WEB)

Hold both hands out, palms up, like you are holding a gift. Then slowly turn your hands over and touch your palms with your fingers, as if writing a name on them. Say the verse together while you do it.

The Story: Isaiah 49 for Kids

Long ago, God spoke to a prophet named Isaiah, and he sent a message to the people of Israel. The people had been taken far away from their home in Jerusalem, and many of them felt that God had forgotten them. They sat in a strange land and wondered if anyone still cared about them.

God spoke to the people through Isaiah. He reminded them that he had chosen them and called them by name. He told them that he would bring his people home and gather them together again. He said that even the faraway places would hear about his love.

The people thought, “The Lord has forsaken us. He has forgotten us.” But God answered them with a question that made their hearts soften. He asked, “Can a mother forget her baby who nurses at her breast?” Most mothers would never forget their little child, and God said that he would never forget his people either.

Then God made a promise. He said that the people who had been far away would come back home. Their walls would be built up again, and their children would return. The land that had been empty would be full of people again, and everyone would see that God keeps his promises.

God said that he would stay close to his people. He would be their Savior and their Redeemer. He is the strong God who keeps his word, and he would bring his people home safely.

Read It Together

Isaiah 49:15

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!

(WEB)

Point out the picture of a mother who loves her baby. Ask the children to think about how much a mother cares, and then explain that God loves his children even more.

Isaiah 49:13

Sing, heavens; and be joyful, earth; and break out into singing, mountains: for the LORD has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his afflicted.

(WEB)

Show how the whole world is invited to sing when God comforts his people. Explain that when God comforts someone, there is a reason to celebrate and be glad.

Isaiah 49:10

They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun strike them: for he who has mercy on them will lead them. He will guide them by springs of water.

(WEB)

Point out that God leads his people like a shepherd. He gives them what they need, like food, water, and shade, so they are never left without care.

Talk About It

  • What is one time you felt like someone forgot about you, and how did that feel?
  • Why do you think God says he will never forget his children?
  • How does it help you to know that God has your name written on his hands?
  • What is one way you can remember that God is always close to you?
  • Who is one person you can tell when you feel alone or forgotten?

Activity Ideas

Hand Name Tracing Craft

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Have each child trace their hand on the paper and write their name in the center of the palm. Talk about how God has written each child’s name on his hands. Children can take their handprint home as a reminder that God remembers them.

Shepherd and Sheep Game

You will need a blindfold or a scarf and a open space in your room. Choose one child to be the shepherd and have the others be sheep. The shepherd must find and gently guide the sheep back to a safe spot, using only their voice. Explain that God guides his people like a shepherd guides his sheep, always leading them home.

Take-Home Promise Card

You will need small index cards and a pen. Write “God remembers me” on each card and let the children decorate it with drawings or stickers. Encourage them to place the card on their pillow or in their backpack. Each time they see it, they can remember that God has not forgotten them.

Teacher Notes

Isaiah 49 speaks to people who felt abandoned and far from home. God answers their fear with a promise of faithful love and restoration. For adults, the passage shows that God’s care is not based on our feelings but on his own character and faithfulness.

When teaching children, avoid overstating the historical details, such as exact places or events, because the focus should be on God’s love and faithfulness. Keep the emphasis on the simple truth that God remembers his people.

A Prayer to Close

Father, thank you that you never forget us. Help us remember that you have written our names on your hands. When we feel alone, remind us that you are close and that you care for us. Keep us safe in your love and help us trust you every day. Amen.
