Jeremiah 45 teaches children that God takes care of His people even when they feel tired and sad, and that they should not chase after big things for themselves. This lesson works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God knows when we are tired and worried, and He keeps us safe. We do not need to chase after big things for ourselves, because God is the one who takes care of us.

Memory Verse

Jeremiah 45:5

Do you seek great things for yourself? Don’t seek them; for, behold, I will bring evil on all flesh,’ says the LORD; ‘but I will let you escape with your life wherever you go.’”

Put both hands on your heart when you say “God takes care of me.” Then open your arms wide like you are holding a big blanket. Say the verse together while you do the motion.

The Story: Jeremiah 45 for Kids

A long time ago, a man named Baruch helped the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was God’s messenger, and he told the people of Judah what God wanted them to know. Baruch wrote down God’s words in a book so they would not be forgotten.

One day, Baruch felt very sad and tired. He said, “Oh no, I am so worried! God has given me so much sorrow, and I cannot rest.” Baruch was carrying a heavy heart, and he needed to know that God still cared for him.

God sent a message to Baruch through Jeremiah. God said, “Baruch, I see what you have been building and planting. Some of those things will be broken down. This is happening to the whole land, not just to you.” God was telling Baruch that the world was changing.

Then God gave Baruch an important reminder. God said, “Do you want to seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them. I will bring hard times to many people, but I will keep you safe wherever you go.” Baruch learned that God was going to protect him.

So Baruch did not have to chase after big things to feel important. God was the one who would keep him alive. Baruch could trust God even when things were hard.

Read It Together

Jeremiah 45:1-2

1 The message that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2 “The LORD, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch…

Point out that Jeremiah spoke God’s message to Baruch and that Baruch was writing these words down. Ask the children how it might feel to be someone who helps God’s messenger.

Jeremiah 45:3

‘You said, “Woe is me now! For the LORD has added sorrow to my pain! I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.”’

Show the children that Baruch was honest about how he felt. Explain that God hears us when we are sad and tired, and we can tell Him how we feel.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing that makes you feel tired or worried sometimes?
  • How do you think Baruch felt when he said he could not find any rest?
  • Why do you think God did not want Baruch to chase after big things for himself?
  • What is one way you can tell God how you are feeling?
  • How does it feel to know that God will keep you safe wherever you go?

Activity Ideas

Hand Blanket Craft

You will need construction paper, crayons, scissors, and glue. Have each child trace one hand on the paper and cut it out. On each finger, have them draw or write one thing they feel safe about. Glue the hand onto a piece of colored paper and display it as a reminder that God holds us in His hands.

Safe Keeper Game

Choose one child to be the “Baruch” and stand in the middle of the room. The rest of the children stand around the edge and gently hum a calm song. When you call “Safe Keeper,” the children walk slowly toward Baruch and form a circle around him to show that God keeps us protected. Switch roles so everyone has a turn.

Take-Home Prayer Card

You will need index cards, a pencil, and a marker. Write the memory verse on one side of the card and draw a simple picture of a blanket or a pair of hands on the other side. Send the card home with each child and encourage them to read it aloud with their family before bed.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Jeremiah 45 is a short and personal chapter. It shows God speaking directly to one faithful helper during a time of national crisis. The main truth is that God cares for individuals, and He calls His people to find their security in Him rather than in their own ambitions.

Avoid suggesting to children that God will always keep them from every hardship. The text promises that Baruch will escape with his life, but it does not promise a life free of all trouble. Keep the focus on God’s faithfulness and presence rather than on guaranteed outcomes.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank You for taking care of us when we feel tired and sad. Help us remember that we do not have to chase after big things, because You are with us. Thank You for keeping us safe wherever we go. Amen.
