This lesson teaches children that God sees and knows every step we take, even when we feel like we cannot find Him. It works well for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the activity.
Big Idea
God always knows where we are, even when we cannot see Him. We can trust Him when things feel dark or confusing, because He is faithful and He knows the way we go.
Memory Verse
Job 23:10
But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I shall come out like gold.

Teach the children to point up to the sky with one hand, then place the other hand flat on their heart. Say the words slowly together while making the motions, and repeat the whole verse three times until they can do it without help.
The Story: Job 23 for Kids
Job was a good man who loved God very much. But many terrible things happened to him. He lost his children, his animals, and his health, and he felt very sad and confused. Job had friends who came to visit, but they did not understand why this was happening to him.
Job talked to God about his trouble. He said, “I wish I knew where to find God! I would tell Him everything that is wrong, and I would listen to what He says back to me.” Job felt like God was far away. He looked east, and God was not there. He looked west, and God was not there. He looked north and south, and still he could not see God anywhere.
Even though Job could not see God, he kept walking the path God had given him. He did not turn away from God’s words. He held them close to his heart, because they were more important to him than food. Job trusted that God was still close, even when it did not feel that way.
Job said something very special about God. He said that God knows the way we take. When we go through hard times, God is watching over us. Job believed that after he had been tested, he would come out of the trouble like a shiny piece of gold, pure and strong.
Job still felt afraid and his heart felt weak, because the troubles were so big. But he did not stop talking to God. He told God honestly how he felt, and he kept believing that God was there with him in the dark.
Read It Together
Job 23:3
Oh that I knew where I might find him! That I might come even to his seat!
(WEB)
Point out that Job wanted to find God and come right to where He was. Explain that it is okay to tell God when we want to find Him, and that God hears us even when we feel far away.
Job 23:8-9
8 “If I go east, he is not there; if west, I can’t find him; 9 He works to the north, but I can’t see him. He turns south, but I can’t catch a glimpse of him.
(WEB)
Show the children how Job looked in every direction for God. Explain that Job’s searching shows how much he wanted to be near God, and that God was never really lost to him, even when Job could not see Him.
Job 23:11-12
11 My foot has held fast to his steps. I have kept his way, and not turned away. 12 I haven’t gone back from the commandment of his lips. I have treasured up the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Point out that Job kept following God’s steps and treasured God’s words. Explain that choosing to keep close to God’s word, even on hard days, is something we can all practice.
Talk About It
- What is something that made you feel far away from God, and what did you do about it?
- Job looked everywhere for God but could not see Him. Why do you think God still knew where Job was?
- How do you think Job felt when he talked honestly to God about his trouble?
- What are some words from God that you could treasure and keep close to your heart?
- When things feel dark, what is one thing you can remember about how God sees you?
Activity Ideas
Gold Refiner Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a yellow or gold crayon. Ask each child to draw a simple picture of a path with footprints, then draw a small eye or star at the end to show that God is watching the way. Let them color a shiny gold border around the picture to remind them that God brings us through hard times like pure gold.
Follow the Leader Steps
Clear a space in the room and tape a simple path of footsteps on the floor using paper cutouts or masking tape. One child walks the path while the others call out “God knows the way you take!” Then let the children take turns being the leader, and talk about how following God’s steps means staying close to Him even when we cannot see the whole path.
Take-Home Verse Card
Give each child an index card, a pencil, and a small piece of string or yarn. Have them write the memory verse reference on one side and draw a simple picture of footprints on the other. Punch a hole in the corner, tie the yarn through, and encourage them to hang the card on a bedroom doorknob or backpack so they see it each day.
Teacher Notes
Job’s story shows that a faithful person can feel distant from God and still trust that God is near. For adults, this passage reminds us that honest questions and lament are a real part of faith, and that God remains aware of our path even when His presence feels hidden. Job does not get easy answers in this chapter, but he keeps speaking to God and holding onto His words.
Avoid suggesting to children that God will always remove hard things from their lives or that trusting Him guarantees a happy outcome. Job’s suffering continues in the chapters that follow. Focus instead on the truth that God knows where we are and remains faithful.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank You for knowing the way we take, even when we cannot see You. Help us keep our feet on Your path and hold Your words close to our hearts. When we feel far away, remind us that You are still near. Amen.
