This lesson teaches children that God is always near, even when we cannot see Him or feel Him. It is written for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the verses, and the activity.
Big Idea
God knows the way we take, and He is with us even when we cannot find Him. We can keep walking with Him and trust that He will bring us through.
Memory Verse
Job 23:10
But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I shall come out like gold.

Hold both hands up, palms out, then slowly turn them over like a loaf of bread being flipped in a pan. As you say the verse, let your hands show the gold coming out of the fire, bright and clean.
The Story: Job 23 for Kids
Job was a good man who loved God, but he had lost almost everything. His animals were gone, his children were gone, and his body was covered in painful sores. His friends kept talking to him, but they did not understand why these hard things had happened. Job felt very sad and very confused about it all.
Job wanted to talk with God face to face. He said, “Oh, that I knew where I might find Him!” Job looked everywhere he could think of. He looked east, and God was not there. He looked west, and he could not find Him there either. He looked north and south, but still he could not see God anywhere.
Even though Job could not see God, he kept walking the way God had shown him. He did not turn away from God’s words, and he treasured them more than the food he ate every day. Job told himself that God knew exactly where he was. He said that God knew the path he was taking.
Job believed that when God was finished testing him, he would come out of the hard time like gold coming out of a hot fire. Gold is made purer and brighter when it passes through the fire. Job trusted that God was working something good, even though he did not understand it yet.
Job was still afraid, and he did not pretend otherwise. He told God honestly that his heart felt weak and that he was frightened. Yet he also said that the darkness had not covered him completely. Job kept talking to God, even when he could not feel Him close by.
Read It Together
Job 23:8-9
8 “If I go east, he is not there; if west, I can’t find him; 9 He works to the north, but I can’t see him. He turns south, but I can’t catch a glimpse of him.
(WEB)
Point out that Job looked in every direction for God and could not find Him. Ask children to notice that even a faithful person can feel like God has gone missing. Remind them that Job still kept talking to God about how he felt.
Job 23:10-11
10 But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I shall come out like gold. 11 My foot has held fast to his steps. I have kept his way, and not turned away.
(WEB)
Show children the words “he knows the way that I take” and explain that God sees every step we make. Point out that Job kept his feet on God’s path even when the road was hard. Let children see that faithfulness means staying close to God in the hard times too.
Job 23:16-17
16 For God has made my heart faint. The Almighty has terrified me. 17 Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither did he cover the thick darkness from my face.
(WEB)
Explain that Job was honest about being afraid and feeling faint. Point out that Job still told God the truth about his feelings. Help children understand that they can be honest with God, even when they are scared.
Talk About It
- What is one thing you would like to say to God if you could talk to Him face to face?
- Where do you sometimes look for God when you feel like He is far away?
- How do you think God knows the way you are walking, even when you cannot see Him?
- What kinds of hard things make you feel scared or sad, and how can you tell God about them?
- How do you think God can make us stronger, like gold that comes out of the fire?
Activity Ideas
Gold Refining Craft
You will need gold or yellow construction paper, glue, a sheet of black paper, and some glitter. Have each child tear the gold paper into small pieces and glue them onto the black paper to look like shining gold in a dark place. As they work, talk about how God can bring something good out of hard times.
Searching in Every Direction Game
Hide a small object, like a toy or a sticker, somewhere in the room while the children close their eyes. Have them search in the east, west, north, and south corners, saying “I cannot find Him yet” as they look. When they finally find the object, celebrate and say that God is never really lost to us, even when we search.
Take-Home Prayer Card
You will need an index card, a pencil, and a marker. Ask each child to write or draw one hard thing they are facing on one side of the card, and on the other side draw a path with footprints. Encourage them to take the card home and show it to a parent, reminding them that God knows the way they take.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that faithful people can sometimes feel distant from God and still trust Him. Job’s honesty about his pain and confusion is part of his faith, not a sign that it is missing. The passage invites us to hold onto God’s character even when we cannot see the reasons behind our suffering.
Avoid telling children that if they trust God hard enough, bad things will never happen to them. Job’s story does not promise an easy life. Instead, emphasize that God is faithful and near, and that He sees every step we take.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, we are glad that You always know where we are, even when we cannot see You. When we feel lost or scared, help us to keep following You and to tell You the truth about how we feel. Thank You for watching over our steps and for bringing good things out of hard times. Amen.
