In this lesson, children learn that God speaks to people and cares about them even when they are hurting or confused. This lesson fits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God is kind, and He talks to us because He loves us and wants us to listen and learn.

Memory Verse

Job 33:4

The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

(WEB)

Place one hand on your chest, then slowly raise both arms above your head like a breath coming in. Say the verse together while you breathe in and out with the motion.

The Story: Job 33 for Kids

Job was a man who had been through many hard things. He had lost his children, his animals, and his health. Three friends had come to visit him, but they kept saying he must have done something very wrong. Job did not think he had done anything to deserve all his trouble, and he wanted to talk to God about it.

Then a young man named Elihu spoke. He had been listening quietly for a long time, and now he felt he had something to say. He told Job, “Please listen to me, Job. Listen to all my words.” Elihu wanted Job to know that God made every person and gives every person breath.

Elihu explained that God does speak to people, even when they do not pay attention. Sometimes God speaks in dreams at night, when people are sleeping and cannot hear anyone else. God wants people to turn back to Him and stay safe from harm. Elihu said that God is gentle and patient, not harsh or unfair.

Elihu also reminded everyone that God helps people who are struggling. When someone is sick or sad, God can bring them back to health and joy. He can rescue them from danger and give them light again. Elihu said God is always ready to forgive anyone who turns to Him and asks.

At the end, Elihu invited Job to stop and think. He said, “Hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.” Elihu wanted Job to slow down, listen carefully, and learn what God was trying to say. This shows that God wants to teach His children, and it helps them trust Him even in hard times.

Read It Together

Job 33:14

For God speaks once, yes twice, though man pays no attention.

(WEB)

Point out that God speaks to people, even though they sometimes do not notice. Ask the children how they can get better at listening to God.

Job 33:26

He prays to God, and he is favorable to him, so that he sees his face with joy. He restores to man his righteousness.

(WEB)

Explain that when people pray to God, He hears them and welcomes them. Show the children that God is happy to hear from them any time.

Job 33:33

If not, listen to me. Hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.”

(WEB)

Point out that Elihu wanted Job to be quiet and listen so he could learn. Encourage the children to be still and listen when someone is teaching them about God.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing that Elihu wanted Job to do?
  • How can God talk to people, even when they are sleeping?
  • Why do you think God wants to help people who are sad or sick?
  • What is a time when you had to be quiet so you could listen to someone?
  • How can you show God that you want to listen to Him?

Activity Ideas

Ear Craft

You will need paper plates, markers, glue, and construction paper. Have each child draw a large ear on the paper plate and cut it out. Let them decorate the ear with stickers or colors. Talk about how God wants us to listen to Him, and tape the ear to a wall where children can see it.

Quiet Listening Game

Ask the children to sit in a circle. Choose one child to be the listener and have them close their eyes. Quietly tap a child on the shoulder who then makes a simple sound, like a clap or a hum. The listener must guess who made the sound. Afterward, talk about how listening carefully helps us learn and understand.

Listening Jar at Home

You will need a clean jar, paper slips, and a pen. Each day, have your child write one thing they heard God teach them through a Bible story, a prayer, or a kind word from someone. Place the paper in the jar. At the end of the week, read the notes together and thank God for speaking to you.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this passage shows that God speaks to people in many ways and cares about them even in suffering. Elihu’s message is that God is patient, fair, and always ready to restore those who turn back to Him. Adults can take comfort in knowing God actively works in the lives of people who are struggling.

Avoid overstating to children that every hard thing happens because someone did something wrong. Job’s story shows that suffering is not always a punishment, and children may feel confused or worried if they think their troubles are always their fault. Keep the focus on God’s kindness and His desire to teach and help.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for speaking to us and loving us. Help us to be quiet and listen when You want to teach us. Thank You for being gentle and kind, and for always being ready to help us when we are sad or hurting. We trust You to take care of us every day. Amen.
