This lesson teaches children that God knows and cares for each of them, so they do not need to be afraid or worried. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach, including the story, discussion and one activity.
Big Idea
God knows everything about you, and He takes care of you. You never have to be afraid, because you are very important to Him.
Memory Verse
Luke 12:7
But the very hairs of your head are all counted. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.

Have the children hold up both hands and wiggle their fingers slowly as they say the verse together. Then have them tap the top of their head with one finger for the word “hairs,” reminding them that God even knows how many hairs are on their heads.
The Story: Luke 12 for Kids
One day, a huge crowd gathered to hear Jesus teach, and so many people were there that they were pushing and stepping on one another. Jesus turned first to His friends, the disciples, and gave them an important warning. He told them to be careful of the way some religious leaders pretended to be good when their hearts were not really good.
Jesus wanted His friends to know that nothing stays hidden forever. Whatever people say in secret will one day be known. He also told them not to be afraid of people who could hurt the body, because those people can do nothing more than that. Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid, my friends.” Then He pointed to something small that everyone knew about: sparrows. Little birds were sold very cheaply, and yet God did not forget even one of them.
Jesus then reminded them that God counts every hair on their heads. Because God cares so much about the tiniest details, the disciples did not need to worry. Jesus told them that they were worth far more than many sparrows, so they could trust God completely.
Later, a man in the crowd asked Jesus to tell his brother to share an inheritance with him. Jesus answered that He was not the judge of this matter. He warned everyone to guard their hearts against wanting more and more stuff, because a person’s life is not measured by how much they own. Then Jesus told a story about a rich farmer whose crops grew so big that he decided to build bigger barns. The farmer thought he could relax and enjoy his goods for many years. But God said to him, “You foolish one, tonight your life will be required of you.” Jesus wanted everyone to know that being rich toward God matters more than piling up treasure for yourself.
Jesus then turned back to His disciples and told them not to worry about food or clothes. He pointed to the ravens, which God feeds, and the lilies, which God dresses in beauty. If God takes such loving care of birds and flowers, how much more will He take care of His children? Jesus ended by saying, “Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.”
Read It Together
Luke 12:6-7
6 “Aren’t five sparrows sold for two assaria coins? Not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 But the very hairs of your head are all counted. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.

Point out how God notices even the smallest sparrow and every hair on our heads. Ask the children what it means that God knows them that well, and remind them that a loving Father pays close attention.
Luke 12:22-24
22 He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life, what you will eat, nor yet for your body, what you will wear. 23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they don’t sow, they don’t reap, they have no warehouse or barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds!

Show the children that Jesus tells them not to be anxious about food and clothing. Point out that the ravens are fed by God, and explain that we are worth much more to Him than birds.
Luke 12:32
Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.
(WEB)
Explain that Jesus calls His followers “little flock,” which shows how close He is to them. Help the children see that God is pleased to give His people His kingdom, so they can rest without fear.
Talk About It
- What is one thing you sometimes worry about, and how could you tell God about it?
- Why do you think God knows even the number of hairs on your head?
- What did the farmer in the story want, and what did God say about his choice?
- How does it feel to know that God takes care of birds and flowers, and you are worth even more?
- What can you do this week to remember that you do not need to be afraid?
Activity Ideas
Bird and Flower Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a few pictures of sparrows, ravens and lilies if you have them. Ask each child to draw one bird and one flower, then write or say one thing God takes care of. Hang the drawings on the wall so the children can see God’s care all around them.
Sparrow Freeze Game
Play a simple game where the children act like sparrows flying around the room. When you call out “Worry!” they must freeze, and when you call “God cares!” they fly again. Each time they freeze, ask them to name one thing they could trust God with. This helps them move their bodies while thinking about trust.
Take-Home Hair Count
Give each child a small card and ask them to draw a picture of themselves with a few lines for hair. Have them take the card home and tell a family member that God knows every hair on their head. Encourage them to share one worry with their family at dinner and then pray about it together.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God’s knowledge and care reach into the smallest details of life. Jesus calls His followers to stop living for possessions and to trust the Father who provides for them. The passage also warns that living only for accumulated wealth leaves the heart empty before God.
Be careful not to suggest to children that trusting God means nothing bad will ever happen to them. The lesson is about God’s loving presence and care, not a promise that every need or hardship will vanish. Keep the focus on who God is and how much He loves them.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Jesus, thank You that You know us so well and care for us every single day. Help us not to be afraid when we feel worried, because we know You are with us. Help us trust You with our food, our clothes and everything else we need. We love You, and we want to belong to You. Amen.
