This lesson teaches children that God keeps His promises, bringing justice to the wicked and healing and joy to those who love Him. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God sees everything, He keeps His promises, and He makes right what is wrong. Those who love Him can trust Him to care for them.
Memory Verse
Malachi 4:2
But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall.
(WEB)
Teach the children to hold both hands up in front of their faces, then slowly open them wide like sunshine spreading out. Have them say “sun of righteousness” as they open their hands, and then say it together a few times.
The Story: Malachi 4 for Kids
Long ago, God sent a prophet named Malachi to speak to His people, the Israelites. Many people had stopped caring about God. Some were proud, and some did wrong things and thought they would never be caught. God wanted them to know that He had not forgotten.
God told Malachi to warn the people about a day that was coming. On that day, the proud and the wicked would be burned up like dry straw in a hot oven. Nothing would be left of them. That was a sober truth for anyone who had turned away from God.
But God also had a happy promise for those who loved and honored His name. For them, the sun of righteousness would rise, and it would bring healing. God said, “You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall.” Picture young calves running and jumping around in a field, full of joy and freedom.
God also reminded the people to remember the law He had given through His servant Moses. He wanted them to live by His rules and not forget them. Then God made another promise. He would send a messenger named Elijah before the great day of the LORD came.
Elijah would help families heal and get along. He would turn the hearts of parents toward their children, and the hearts of children toward their parents. God wanted families to love one another and come back to Him together.
Read It Together
Malachi 4:1
“For, behold, the day comes, it burns as a furnace; and all the proud, and all who work wickedness, will be stubble; and the day that comes will burn them up,” says the LORD of Armies, “that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
(WEB)
Point out that God describes the day of judgment as a burning furnace. Explain that God is fair, and He takes wrong seriously. Help the children see that this verse is a warning, and that God wants everyone to turn toward Him.
Malachi 4:5-6
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes. 6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”
(WEB)
Show the children how God planned ahead and sent Elijah to help people prepare. Ask them to notice how God cares about families and wants parents and children to love each other. Point out that God’s plans include bringing people back to Him.
Malachi 4:4
“Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded to him in Horeb for all Israel, even statutes and ordinances.
(WEB)
Explain that God’s law was a gift to help His people live well. Remind the children that remembering God’s instructions helps us stay close to Him. Ask them what rules at home help keep the family safe and happy.
Talk About It
- What do you think it means that God sees everything people do?
- How did God show He keeps His promises in this chapter?
- What do you imagine it would feel like to leap around like a happy calf?
- How can your family show love to each other like Elijah helped families do?
- What is one way you can remember God’s instructions this week?
Activity Ideas
Sunrise Drawing
Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask them to draw a sunrise over a hill with rays spreading out, and a small calf jumping in the grass below. As they draw, talk about how the sun brings healing and joy. Let them write “Sun of Righteousness” across the top.
Calf Leap Game
Clear a space in a room or yard. Call out “wicked” and have the children stomp their feet lightly like they are stepping on ashes, then call out “calves” and have them leap and hop happily. Keep the game light and short, and end by reminding everyone that God brings joy to those who love Him.
Family Helper Card
Give each child an index card or a small piece of paper and a marker. Have them write one kind thing they can do for someone in their family this week, such as helping set the table or saying a kind word. Encourage them to take the card home and place it somewhere they will see it each day as a reminder to love their family as God loves us.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter reminds us that God takes justice seriously and will one day make all things right. It also shows that God offers healing and joy to those who honor Him, and that He cares deeply about the bonds between parents and children. Read the whole chapter slowly to see how these themes connect.
With children, avoid suggesting that God is only angry or that the day of judgment should be the main focus. Keep the emphasis on God’s faithfulness, His love for families, and the joy of trusting Him. Be gentle when talking about the burning and ashes, and let the hopeful promises shine most.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You that You see everything and You always keep Your promises. Help us love You and honor Your name every day. Please bring healing and joy to our hearts, and help our families love each other well. Thank You for being faithful to us. Amen.
