This lesson teaches children that Jesus invites everyone who is tired and worried to come to him, and he promises to give them rest. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

Jesus is gentle and kind, and when we feel tired or worried, we can always go to him and ask for help.

Memory Verse

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

Hold both hands out in front of you, palms up, like you are receiving a gift. Then slowly bring them to your chest as you say the words, showing how Jesus gathers us close when we are tired.

The Story: Matthew 11 for Kids

Jesus had been busy teaching and preaching in many towns. His cousin John, who had been baptizing people, was now sitting in a prison cell. John had heard about all the amazing things Jesus was doing, so he sent two of his friends to ask Jesus a question. They wanted to know if Jesus was the one God promised to send.

Jesus did not give a long speech. Instead, he told the men to go back and tell John what they had seen. Blind people could see again. People who could not walk were walking. Sick people were made clean, and the deaf could hear. Even the poor were hearing good news. Jesus wanted John to know that God’s promise was coming true.

Then Jesus turned to the crowd and asked them a question. “What did you go out into the desert to see?” he said. He talked about John, who was not a man in soft fancy clothes. John was a true prophet, a messenger sent to get people ready for God’s kingdom. Jesus said John was greater than any person born before him.

Jesus also spoke about the people of his time. He said they were like children playing in the marketplace, complaining that their friends would not dance when they played music and would not cry when they sang sad songs. People criticized John for fasting and criticized Jesus for eating with friends. Jesus said God’s wisdom would be proven right in the end.

Then Jesus said something that made everyone stop and listen. “Come to me, all of you who are tired and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” He said his yoke, a wooden frame used to help carry heavy things, was easy, and his burden was light. Jesus was always gentle and humble, and he wanted to help the people he loved.

Read It Together

Matthew 11:4-5

4 Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.

Point out that Jesus did not just tell John who he was. He asked the messengers to tell John what they saw. Ask the children to name something they have seen Jesus do in the Bible stories they know.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Read the whole invitation slowly so the children hear how gentle Jesus sounds. Point out the words “rest,” “easy,” and “light.” Explain that a yoke means a tool that helps share a heavy load, so Jesus is saying he will carry the weight with us.

Matthew 11:25-26

25 At that time, Jesus answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants. 26 Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.

Show the children that Jesus thanked his Father for revealing God’s truth to ordinary, humble people. Explain that being little or simple in the eyes of the world is not a problem, because God loves to share his good news with everyone.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing that makes you feel tired or worried sometimes?
  • How do you think it feels to know Jesus is inviting you to come to him?
  • Why do you think Jesus wanted John to hear about the good things he was doing?
  • What is a time when a friend helped you carry something heavy?
  • How can you show gentle kindness to someone who looks tired this week?

Activity Ideas

Yoke and Burden Craft

You will need paper plates, cotton balls, and crayons. Have each child draw a tired face on one side of a plate and a happy, rested face on the other. Glue a few cotton balls to the back as “rest clouds.” Talk about how Jesus wants to take our heavy feelings and give us peace.

Carry the Load Game

Gather a few light objects like pillows or stuffed animals. Have children take turns carrying them across the room while a partner walks beside them and helps balance the load. Afterward, explain that this is like how Jesus walks with us when life feels heavy, and he helps us carry our burdens.

Rest Card for Home

Cut index cards and have each child write or draw a picture of Matthew 11:28 with simple words like “Come to Jesus and rest.” Let them decorate it with stickers or markers. Encourage them to place the card on their bedside table or by the front door to remember to bring their worries to Jesus each day.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that Jesus is the promised one God sent, and his works confirm who he is. His invitation to the weary is not about physical rest alone but about finding peace and relief in a relationship with him. The passage also warns against refusing to respond to God’s message, while showing that the humble receive what the proud overlook.

When teaching children, avoid suggesting that God will remove every problem or difficulty the moment we pray. Jesus promises rest and help, but children may need to understand that rest can come in the middle of hard days, not only after they end.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Jesus, thank you for inviting us to come to you when we feel tired or worried. Help us remember that you are gentle and kind, and that you walk with us every day. Teach us to bring our heavy hearts to you and trust you to give us rest. Amen.
