This lesson teaches children that Jesus knew what was coming, stayed faithful, and still loves His friends, even the ones who failed Him. It is built for kids roughly 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the verses, and the activity.
Big Idea
Jesus knew hard things were coming, and He still chose to love and obey His Father. Even when His friends fell asleep or ran away, He never stopped loving them.
Memory Verse
Matthew 26:41
Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
(WEB)
Teach the verse one phrase at a time. For “Watch and pray,” cup your hands over your eyes like a lookout. For “the flesh is weak,” let your arms go limp and droop. Do the motions together three times, then say the whole verse with the motions.
The Story: Matthew 26 for Kids
Jesus finished teaching His friends. He told them that in two days the Passover feast would come, and that He would be handed over to be crucified. Then the chief priests and leaders gathered together in a big house and made a secret plan to catch Jesus and hurt Him.
Jesus was staying in Bethany at the home of a man named Simon. A woman came in carrying a jar of very expensive perfume. She poured it on Jesus’ head to honor Him. Some of the disciples were angry. “Why waste this?” they said. “We could have sold it and helped poor people!” Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has done a beautiful thing for me.”
One of the twelve friends, Judas, went to the leaders and asked, “What will you give me if I hand Jesus over to you?” They counted out thirty pieces of silver for him. From that moment, Judas looked for a chance to betray Jesus.
That evening Jesus ate the Passover meal with His twelve friends. He took bread, thanked God, broke it, and gave it to them, saying it showed His body. Then He shared a cup of wine and said it showed His blood, given so that many people could be forgiven. Jesus told them that one of them would betray Him, and everyone felt very sad.
After the meal they went to a garden called Gethsemane. Jesus went a little way off to pray and said, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me. But not what I want, what you want.” He came back three times and found His friends sleeping. Each time He prayed again, and He told them to stay awake and pray too.
Then Judas came with a crowd carrying swords and clubs. He gave Jesus a kiss as a sign, and the soldiers took Jesus away. One of the friends cut off a servant’s ear, but Jesus healed him and told everyone to put their swords away. Then all the disciples ran away. Jesus was led off to the high priest’s house, while Peter followed from far behind.
Read It Together
Matthew 26:20-22
20 Now when evening had come, he was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, he said, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.” 22 They were exceedingly sorrowful, and each began to ask him, “It isn’t me, is it, Lord?”
(WEB)
Point out that the disciples were very sad and asked, “Is it me?” Ask children how it feels to be worried that you might have done something wrong. Remind them that the friends were honest about their hearts.
Matthew 26:26-28
26 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks for it, and broke it. He gave to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, “All of you drink it, 28 for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.
(WEB)
Show children how Jesus took ordinary bread and wine and gave them a special meaning. Explain that Jesus wanted His friends to remember His love and forgiveness every time they shared a meal together.
Matthew 26:39
He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire.”
(WEB)
Point to the words “not what I desire, but what you desire.” Explain that Jesus was honest with His Father about how hard it felt, and still chose to trust Him. Children can learn that it is good to tell God how we feel.
Talk About It
- How do you think Jesus felt when His friends fell asleep while He was praying?
- Why did Jesus tell Peter and the others to stay awake and pray?
- What did the woman do to show she loved Jesus, and how can we show love to Jesus today?
- Why do you think Peter and the other friends ran away when the soldiers came?
- When you feel scared or tired, what is one thing you can say to God?
Activity Ideas
Paper Plate Garden Scene
You will need paper plates, crayons, green paper strips, and glue. Have each child draw the garden of Gethsemane on a paper plate, with a rock, a few trees, and sleeping friends. Glue on green grass strips and talk about how Jesus prayed there. Let children tell the story back using their picture.
Watch and Pray Freeze Game
Choose one child to be Jesus and the rest to be friends. Jesus walks to a spot across the room and says “Watch and pray.” The friends must freeze with their eyes open, as if on guard. Then the friends act sleepy and yawn, and Jesus gently taps each one. Play a few rounds and end with everyone praying quietly together.
Take-Home Prayer Card
You will need index cards, markers, and a hole punch with string. Write “Watch and pray” on one side and draw a small cup or heart on the other. Have each child write one thing they want to pray about this week. Punch a hole, tie on string, and encourage them to hang it by their bed or in the kitchen.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows the costly obedience of Jesus. He knew the betrayal, the denial, and the cross were coming, yet He prayed honestly, submitted to the Father’s will, and gave His body and blood as a covenant for forgiveness. The passage also shows human weakness: sleeping disciples, a betrayer, and a fearful Peter who all need grace.
Avoid overstating to children that Jesus was never afraid or that failing God means you are a bad person. The story shows Jesus feeling deep sorrow, and it shows His friends being forgiven and restored. Keep the focus on God’s faithful love rather than making the disciples into examples of what not to be.
A Prayer to Close
Jesus, thank You that You stayed faithful even when it was hard. Help us to stay awake and pray when we feel tired or scared. When we fail You, help us to come back to You with honest hearts. Thank You for loving us always. Amen.
