This lesson teaches children that Jesus wants us to listen to his words and do them, like a wise builder who sets his house on solid rock. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach, including the story, a few verses, and an activity.
Big Idea
Jesus wants us to hear his words and obey them, because doing what Jesus says keeps our lives strong, even when storms come.
Memory Verse
Matthew 7:24
“Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.

Teach the children to place both hands flat on the table like a solid floor. As you say the verse, have them tap their hands on the table twice, then lift them and pretend to build a house, stacking their fists one on another. Repeat it together three times, getting a little quieter each time.
The Story: Matthew 7 for Kids
One day Jesus sat on a hillside and talked to a big crowd of people. He told them that when we ask God for good things, he loves to give them to us, just as a loving parent gives a child good food. Jesus also said we should treat other people the way we want to be treated.
Then Jesus told a story about two builders. Both builders wanted to make a house. The first builder was wise, so he dug deep and set his house on a big, solid rock. The second builder was foolish, so he built his house right on the sand, where it was easy to build quickly.
One day a huge storm came. Rain poured down, the floods rose, and the strong winds blew hard against both houses. The house on the rock stayed standing strong. But the house on the sand fell down, and it was a great crash.
Jesus explained that people who hear his words and do them are like the wise builder. People who hear his words and ignore them are like the foolish builder. When the crowd heard Jesus teach, they were amazed, because he spoke with real authority.
Read It Together
Matthew 7:7-8
7 “Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. 8 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.

Point out the three action words, ask, seek, and knock. Explain that Jesus is inviting us to talk to God often, and that he promises to answer. Ask the children which of these words they would like to practice this week.
Matthew 7:12
Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.
(WEB)
Point out that this verse is sometimes called the Golden Rule. Ask the children to think of one simple way they can treat a sibling, friend, or classmate the way they would like to be treated. Keep the example concrete and easy to picture.
Matthew 7:26-27
26 Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn’t do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”
(WEB)
Point out the contrast between the house on the sand and the house that fell. Remind the children that the two houses faced the same storm, but only one was built on something strong. Show how the same contrast applies to the choice to obey Jesus.
Talk About It
- What do you think the wise builder did differently from the foolish builder?
- When have you felt like a storm was coming in your life, and what helped you stay steady?
- What is one thing Jesus taught that is hard to do, and how could you ask God for help with it?
- How would you explain the Golden Rule to a younger brother, sister, or friend?
- What is one thing you can do this week to hear Jesus’ words and then actually do them?
Activity Ideas
Build a Rock House Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a glue stick. Have each child draw two houses, one on a grey rock and one on a patch of sand with waves. Let them color in the rain and wind around both. Ask them to explain which house would stay standing and why.
Foolish Builder Freeze Game
Clear a space in the room. Call out “Wise builder!” and have the children stand firm with feet apart like a rock. Call out “Sandy house!” and have them wobble and tilt, then freeze. Play several rounds, then pause to remind them that hearing and doing are both important.
Take-Home Rock Reminder
Give each child a smooth stone, a marker, and a small slip of paper with Matthew 7:24 written on it. They can paint or write a simple word like “obey” on the stone. Encourage them to keep it on a windowsill or in a pocket as a reminder to build their life on Jesus’ words.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this passage is the close of the Sermon on the Mount, and it calls for a response, not just admiration. Jesus does not describe hearing as the final step. The wise person is the one whose life shows that Jesus’ teaching has taken root. The parable also points to the sure foundation of Jesus himself as the rock that holds when everything else gives way.
Avoid overstating the idea that obedience guarantees a trouble-free life for children. Storms still come to good people. The lesson is that a life built on Jesus stands firm through the storm, and that God is faithful to those who trust him. Keep the focus on God’s faithfulness rather than on promising specific outcomes.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Jesus, thank you for teaching us how to live. Help us to listen to your words and to do what you say, even when it is hard. Help us build our lives on you, our solid rock, so we can stand strong when storms come. Thank you that you always hear us when we ask. Amen.
