This lesson teaches children that God guided the Israelites on their journey with silver trumpets and a cloud, and that we can follow God’s direction too. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God knows the way forward, and when we listen for His signals, we can follow Him safely wherever we go.

Memory Verse

Numbers 10:9

When you go to war in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets. Then you will be remembered before the LORD your God, and you will be saved from your enemies.

Teach the children to cup one hand to their mouth like a trumpet and blow a short, happy “toot.” Then have them point up to the sky as they say the words, showing that God is watching over them.

The Story: Numbers 10 for Kids

Long ago, the Israelites were traveling through a big, dry wilderness. There were a lot of them, so they needed a way to know when to gather together and when to move. God told Moses to make two silver trumpets. Moses hammered the silver into shape, and the trumpets gleamed in the sun.

When the trumpets blew one long call, the leaders came to Moses. When they blew two calls, the tribes on the east side knew it was time to start walking. Every family had a place in line, and everyone knew where to go. The Levites carried the holy tent, and the others set it up again each time they stopped.

God also led them with a cloud. In the day, it floated above the tent, and when the cloud lifted, the people packed up and followed it. The whole camp moved together, one step after another, trusting that God knew the way.

One day, Moses asked his friend Hobab to come along. Moses said, “Come with us, and we will treat you well, for the LORD has spoken good things about Israel.” Hobab was not sure, but Moses asked him to stay and help them find good places to camp.

When the ark of God went ahead of them, Moses prayed, “Rise up, LORD, and let your enemies be scattered!” When the ark stopped, he said, “Return, LORD, to the thousands of Israel.” God was with His people on every step of the trip.

Read It Together

Numbers 10:2

“Make two trumpets of silver. You shall make them of beaten work. You shall use them for the calling of the congregation, and for the journeying of the camps.

Point out that God gave Moses a special way to call everyone together. Ask the children to name a way they hear important announcements, like a bell at school or a parent calling them to dinner.

Numbers 10:33-34

33 They set forward from the Mount of the LORD three days’ journey. The ark of the LORD’s covenant went before them three days’ journey, to seek out a resting place for them. 34 The cloud of the LORD was over them by day, when they set forward from the camp.

Show the children that God went ahead of His people to find the right place to rest. Explain that the cloud was a sign that God was with them every day, even when the road was long.

Numbers 10:35

When the ark went forward, Moses said, “Rise up, the LORD, and let your enemies be scattered! Let those who hate you flee before you!”

(WEB)

Point out Moses’ prayer as the ark moved. Explain that Moses asked God to protect His people from anyone who wanted to harm them, showing that they trusted God to fight for them.

Talk About It

  • What do you think it would feel like to hear a trumpet call and know it was time to move?
  • How did God show the Israelites where to go during their trip?
  • Why do you think it mattered that every family knew its place in line?
  • What is one way you can listen for God’s guidance in your own day?
  • Why did Moses ask God to protect the people as they traveled?

Activity Ideas

Trumpet Craft

Give each child a toilet paper tube, some foil, tape, and a rubber band. Have them cover the tube with foil and fold one end into a flared shape like a trumpet bell. Let them decorate it with markers, then practice blowing short and long calls together.

Follow the Cloud Game

Choose one child to be the cloud and have them lead the others around the room. When the leader stops, the group freezes and listens for a signal, such as a clap. Each time, switch leaders so everyone gets a turn following.

Trumpet Reminder Card

Fold a sheet of paper into a card and draw a simple trumpet on the front. Inside, have the child write or draw one thing God helps them do each day. Encourage them to keep the card near their bed or at the breakfast table as a reminder to listen for God.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God organized His people with care, giving each tribe a clear role and a clear way to move together. It reminds us that God does not leave His people to wander without direction, and that He guides both through signals and through His presence.

With children, avoid suggesting that God always gives such obvious signs today. Keep the focus on trusting God’s care and listening for His direction through prayer, Scripture, and the wise counsel of others.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for guiding us through every step of our lives. Help us listen for Your voice and follow You even when we cannot see the whole road ahead. Thank You for always being with us. Amen.
