This lesson teaches children that God gave His people trumpets to help them know when to gather, when to move, and when to call on Him for help. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God is the one who leads His people, and He gives them simple signals so they can stay together and follow Him.

Memory Verse

Numbers 10:10

“Also in the day of your gladness, and in your set feasts, and in the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be to you for a memorial before your God. I am the LORD your God.”

(WEB)

Ask the children to stand up and cup one hand beside their mouth like a trumpet. When you say the verse, have them raise both arms high and then bring them down slowly. Repeat it together three times, getting a little quieter each time.

The Story: Numbers 10 for Kids

God spoke to Moses while the people of Israel were camped in the wilderness near Mount Sinai. God told Moses to make two trumpets out of silver. These trumpets were not toys. They were special signals that would help the whole nation know what to do next.

When Moses blew both trumpets, everyone knew to gather at the door of the Tent of Meeting. When he blew only one, the leaders of the thousands came together to listen. The sound told each group what God wanted them to do, so no one had to guess.

Moses blew a special alarm to tell the families on the east side to start moving. Later, another alarm sent the families on the south side forward. Each tribe had its place, and the trumpets helped them march in order through the wilderness.

The people did not walk on their own strength. A cloud went up over the tabernacle to show them when to move and when to stop. When the ark went ahead, Moses prayed, “Rise up, LORD, and let your enemies be scattered!” He trusted God to go before them.

God wanted His people to remember that He was with them in every step. The trumpets, the cloud, and the ark all pointed to one truth: the Lord was their leader and their protector.

Read It Together

Numbers 10:2

“Make two trumpets of silver. You shall make them of beaten work. You shall use them for the calling of the congregation, and for the journeying of the camps.

Point out that God gave Moses clear instructions for the trumpets. Ask the children what it would be like to get a message from God that tells them exactly what to do. Explain that the trumpets were a gift that helped the people stay organized and calm.

Numbers 10:9

When you go to war in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets. Then you will be remembered before the LORD your God, and you will be saved from your enemies.

(WEB)

Show the children that when the people faced enemies, they did not fight alone. The trumpet call reminded them that God would remember them and save them. Talk about times when children feel scared and how God is still with them.

Numbers 10:35-36

35 When the ark went forward, Moses said, “Rise up, the LORD, and let your enemies be scattered! Let those who hate you flee before you!” 36 When it rested, he said, “Return, the LORD, to the ten thousands of the thousands of Israel.”

(WEB)

Read these verses slowly and point out Moses’ prayers as the ark moved and rested. Explain that prayer was a normal part of traveling with God. Ask children how they might pray before they start something new.

Talk About It

  • Why do you think God gave the people trumpets instead of letting them guess where to go?
  • What is one way you know it is time to come together with your family or friends?
  • How did the cloud over the tabernacle help the people feel safe as they traveled?
  • What do you think Moses felt when he prayed for God to scatter the enemies?
  • How can you follow God’s leading at home, at school, or at church this week?

Activity Ideas

Paper Trumpet Craft

You will need a paper towel tube, tape, construction paper, and markers. Let each child decorate the tube and tape a cone of paper over one end to make a trumpet. As they make their trumpets, talk about how the real trumpets called the people together. Encourage them to name one person they want to gather with this week.

Follow the Leader Game

Gather the children in a open space and choose one child to be the leader. Use a simple clap or whistle as the signal for “go” and a different sound for “stop” and “gather.” Each time the leader gives a signal, everyone must respond together. Explain that God gave clear signals to His people, and we follow His lead too.

Take-Home Verse Card

Cut index cards and write Numbers 10:10 on one side, with a small drawing of a trumpet on the other. Give one card to each child to keep at home. Ask them to show it to a parent or sibling and say the verse together at dinner or bedtime. This helps the lesson continue beyond the classroom.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God organizes His people with care. The trumpets, the order of the tribes, and the cloud all display God’s wisdom and faithfulness in leading a large community through a difficult place. Believers can take comfort that God still guides His people, often through His Word and the prayers of His church.

Avoid suggesting to children that the trumpets are a model for how every church must worship today or that following God always means a clear, loud signal. Keep the focus on God’s faithful presence and His care for His people.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for leading us and for being with us every day. Help us listen for Your voice and follow You closely. Keep us together as a family and a church, and help us trust You when we do not know what comes next. Amen.
