This lesson teaches children that God gave the priests and Levites special jobs to care for His holy tent, and that God Himself was their portion and inheritance. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God gives every helper a job that matters, and He takes good care of the people who serve Him faithfully.

Memory Verse

Numbers 18:20

The LORD said to Aaron, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel.

Hold your hands out in front of you, then pull them close to your heart as you say the words slowly. This small motion helps children connect God’s care with a feeling they can carry through the week.

The Story: Numbers 18 for Kids

God spoke to Aaron, the first high priest of Israel. Aaron had sons, and his whole family belonged to the tribe of Levi. God told Aaron that he and his sons would be in charge of the holy tent, and that they would carry the responsibility for the sanctuary and its altar.

God also gave Aaron’s family helpers from the tribe of Levi. These Levites were a gift to Aaron and his sons. They would help take care of the Tent of Meeting, but only the priests could go near the holy items. God made that rule so that no one would be hurt by coming too close to what was holy.

God said that He Himself would provide for the priests. The offerings the people brought were set aside for Aaron’s family to eat and use. God told Aaron, “I am your portion and your inheritance.” The priests did not get land like the other tribes, because God Himself was their share.

The people gave a tenth of what they had to the Levites, and the Levites gave a tenth of that gift back to God. God said that the Levites could eat their reward anywhere, because it was payment for their work in the tent. Each helper had a job, and each job was seen and rewarded.

Read It Together

Numbers 18:1

The LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your fathers’ house with you shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.

Point out that God spoke directly to Aaron and told him what his family’s job would be. Ask children how it feels to know someone trusted them with an important job.

Numbers 18:6

Behold, I myself have taken your brothers the Levites from among the children of Israel. They are a gift to you, dedicated to the LORD, to do the service of the Tent of Meeting.

(WEB)

Explain that God called the Levites a gift to the priests, dedicated to Him. Help children see that each person in a church or family can be a gift to others when they work together.

Talk About It

  • What job did God give to Aaron and his sons, and why was it important?
  • How did the Levites help the priests in the Tent of Meeting?
  • Why do you think God told people to stay away from the holy things?
  • What did God say He would be for the priests instead of land?
  • What is one helpful job you can do at home or at church this week?

Activity Ideas

Draw a Tent of Meeting

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask children to draw a simple tent with a door, then add a small altar in front and a few people who are helping. Let them label the priest, the Levite helpers, and God’s presence. Talk about the job each person had while they draw.

Helper Relay Race

You will need two baskets, a few soft balls or rolled socks, and an open space. Divide the children into two teams and have them pass the items from one basket to the other, one at a time, like the Levites carried work for the priests. Cheer for teamwork, and remind everyone that each helper mattered to the team.

Take-Home Thank You Card

You will need index cards, stickers, and a marker. Ask each child to write or draw a thank you note to someone who helps them at home, such as a parent, grandparent, or teacher. Encourage them to deliver the card during the week and share one thing God’s helpers do for us.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Numbers 18 shows that God set apart specific people for specific service and provided for them in a faithful way. The priests and Levites did not earn their place through their own strength, but God made a covenant of salt with them, a lasting promise that He would keep. This points to God’s steady faithfulness toward those who serve Him.

Be careful not to overstate the rules about holy things and death to young children. Focus on the fact that God is holy and set clear boundaries out of care, and avoid presenting the chapter as a list of frightening penalties.

A Prayer to Close

Thank You, Lord, for giving every helper a special job to do. Help us serve You and others with joy, and remind us that You are always enough for us. Thank You for taking care of us every day. Amen.
