In this lesson, children learn that God gave the Levites special jobs to care for his tent where he met with his people, and that every job in God’s family matters. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God gives every one of his people a job to do, and he wants us to do our part faithfully for him.

Memory Verse

Numbers 3:7

They shall keep his requirements, and the requirements of the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.

(WEB)

Ask children to stand up tall and touch their shoulders, then cross their arms over their chest like they are carrying something important. Repeat the verse together while doing the motion, so the words and the job feel connected.

The Story: Numbers 3 for Kids

A long time ago, God’s people were traveling through the wilderness after leaving Egypt. God lived in a special tent called the Tent of Meeting, and he told Moses how to take care of it. God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai and gave him the names of Aaron’s sons, who would serve as priests.

God then chose the tribe of Levi to help Aaron and the priests. God said, “Bring the tribe of Levi near.” The Levites had important work. Some carried the curtains and the coverings, some carried the wooden boards and the poles, and some carried the holy furniture that stood inside the tent.

God counted every Levite family, from babies one month old and up. Moses did just as God asked. There were thousands of Levites, and each family knew exactly what job they had. The Gershonites took care of the curtains. The Kohathites carried the holy ark and the table. The Merarites carried the boards and the bars.

God wanted everyone to know that the Levites belonged to him and were helping to care for his house. God said, “The Levites shall be mine.” Each person had a place, and each job was important, even the jobs that seemed small.

Read It Together

Numbers 3:5-6

5 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 6 “Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him.

Point out that God spoke first and then gave the Levites their task. Ask children to notice that God chose the Levites, and they did not choose themselves. This shows that God invites us to serve him in ways he decides.

Numbers 3:8

They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.

(WEB)

Show that the Levites were trusted with many different holy things. Explain that taking care of something precious to God is a big responsibility, and that faithful people keep watch over what matters to him.

Numbers 3:16

Moses counted them according to the LORD’s word, as he was commanded.

(WEB)

Point out that Moses obeyed God exactly as he was told. Encourage children to notice that obeying God’s instructions carefully is a good way to show trust in him, even when the instructions seem detailed.

Talk About It

  • What job do you think you could do to help take care of your church or your family?
  • Why do you think God cared so much about how his tent was looked after?
  • How did the Levites show that they trusted God with their work?
  • Which of the Levite jobs would you have liked best, and why?
  • What is one small thing you can do this week to help someone else?

Activity Ideas

Draw the Tent Helpers

Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons, and a pencil. Ask them to draw the Tent of Meeting in the middle and then add a Levite carrying something important, such as a curtain, a board, or a lampstand. Let them label the job in their own words. Hang the drawings on the wall so everyone can see the different ways God’s people helped.

Carry the Holy Things

Gather a few household items like a towel, a wooden spoon, a small box, and a pillow. Have children take turns carrying one item across the room very carefully, saying “I am taking care of God’s things” as they walk. Cheer for each child when they finish, reminding them that every job matters to God.

Job Jar at Home

Get a clean jar and some small slips of paper. Write a simple helpful job on each slip, such as setting the table, feeding a pet, or cleaning up toys. Let children draw one slip each day and do that job for the family. Talk together about how doing our part faithfully is a way of serving God and loving our family.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God organized his worshiping community with care, giving each family a clear role in the work of the tabernacle. The detailed counting and assigning of duties reveals a God who values order, faithfulness, and the service of every person. It also reminds believers today that all Christian service, great or small, is meaningful when it is offered to God.

Avoid overstating to children that the Levite jobs are a model for every job they will ever have, since the priestly and Levitical system belonged to Israel’s worship in a specific time and place. Instead, focus on the simple truth that God gives everyone a part to play and wants us to be faithful in it.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank you for giving us all a job to do in your family. Help us to be faithful with the jobs you give us, big or small. Teach us to serve you and to love the people around us. Thank you that you care about every part of our lives. Amen.
