This lesson teaches children that Jesus is the King whom God seats in a place of honor, and that he is also a priest who lasts forever. It suits children aged about 5 to 11 and takes 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, a memory verse, and one activity.
Big Idea
God gave his Son, Jesus, the most important place in heaven. He is our King, and he will always take care of his people.
Memory Verse
Psalm 110:1
The LORD says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet.”
(WEB)
Have children stand up and raise their right hand high, then sit down slowly as they say the verse together. Repeat it three times, each time a little softer, until they can say it with their hands in their laps.
The Story: Psalm 110 for Kids
A long time ago, King David wrote a song about someone very special. David called him “my Lord,” which was a surprising thing to say about someone who was not yet born. David heard God speak to this special person. God told him to come sit at God’s right hand, the place of greatest honor.
In the song, God says that he will make this King’s enemies into a footstool. A footstool is a little bench where a person rests their feet. God’s Son would be given all power, and everything that stood against God would be put under his feet. Nothing could stop him from ruling.
The song also tells us that the King’s people would come to him gladly. They would join him willingly on the day he showed his power. Their hearts would be ready and their hands would be full of joy. David saw them like fresh morning dew, young and full of life.
Then God made a promise that never changes. God said, in simple words, “You will be a priest forever.” A priest helps people come close to God, and this King would do that for us always. Melchizedek was a priest long ago, and this King would serve in that same special way.
The song ends with a picture of victory. God’s King wins over every enemy, and he stops to drink from a stream along the road. Then he lifts up his head, strong and happy, because the battle is won. Children, Jesus is that King, and he is our friend forever.
Read It Together
Psalm 110:1-2
1 The LORD says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet.” 2 The LORD will send out the rod of your strength out of Zion. Rule among your enemies.
(WEB)
Point out the words “sit at my right hand” and ask children what it means to sit near the king. Show how God gives the King a seat of honor, and how he rules even over his enemies.
Psalm 110:4
The LORD has sworn, and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
(WEB)
Explain that a priest is someone who helps people come close to God. Tell children that Jesus helps us talk to God, and that he will never stop doing this for us.
Psalm 110:7
He will drink of the brook on the way; therefore he will lift up his head.
(WEB)
Point out the picture of the King drinking from a stream and lifting his head. Explain that this shows he is strong and not worried, because God is in charge of everything.
Talk About It
- Who is the King that David is talking about in this song?
- Why do you think God gave his Son the seat of honor next to him?
- What does a priest do, and how does Jesus help us like a priest?
- How can you show Jesus that you want to follow him as your King?
- What makes you feel safe when you remember that Jesus rules over everything?
Activity Ideas
Crown Craft
You will need paper, scissors, crayons or markers, and tape. Cut a strip of paper long enough to fit around each child’s head, then let them decorate it with gold and bright colors. Ask them to write “Jesus Is King” on the front before taping the ends together. Children can wear their crown during the story time review.
Footstool Game
You will need a few soft pillows or cushions. Set them in a line on the floor and have children take turns sitting on a chair at one end of the room. Explain that the pillows are like the enemies being placed under the King’s feet, and let children gently step on them to show how God puts everything under Jesus. Keep the movement calm and safe.
Take-Home Prayer Card
You will need index cards, a pencil, and a marker. Write the memory verse on one side of the card and draw a small crown or a cross on the other. Ask children to take the card home and read it to someone in their family each day that week. This helps the lesson stay with them after they leave class.
Teacher Notes
Psalm 110 is one of the most quoted psalms in the New Testament, and Christians have long read it as pointing to Jesus. For adults, the passage shows that Jesus holds the highest honor as King and that he also serves as our priest forever. This gives believers confidence that the one who rules over all also cares for them.
With children, avoid overstating how the psalm should be read or how it connects to other parts of the Bible in detail. Keep the focus on the simple truths of Jesus as King and priest. Let children ask questions, and say “I’m not sure” when you do not know an answer.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Jesus, thank you for being our King and for sitting in the place of honor with God. Thank you that you are also our priest, always helping us come close to God. Help us follow you every day and trust that you are strong and kind. Amen.
