Psalm 128 teaches children that God blesses families who love him and live his way, and that he gives good things to people who trust him every day. This lesson is for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God blesses people who love him and walk in his ways. Happy homes grow when families follow God together.
Memory Verse
Psalm 128:1
Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways.

Put both hands on your heart, then slowly raise them up like a happy sun coming over the hill. Say the verse together while you move your hands, then do it again with your eyes closed.
The Story: Psalm 128 for Kids
Long ago, a family lived in a small town near Jerusalem. The father worked hard in his fields every day. He grew grapes and olives, and he ate the food that his own hands had grown. His family loved God, and they tried to walk in God’s ways.
At the end of each day, the family gathered around their table. The mother sat in the home like a healthy grapevine, full of life and care. Their children sat around the table like little olive plants, growing strong and green. Everyone was happy, and the house felt warm and full.
The father looked at his family and smiled. He said, “Look how good God has been to us. We work, we eat, and we are happy together.” His children laughed and asked him to tell them more about God. He told them that God gives good gifts to families who fear him and follow him.
The psalm says that God blesses people from his holy city, Zion. The family prayed that God would bless them all their days. They asked God to let them see good things in Jerusalem and to see their children’s children grow up too. They prayed for peace for all of Israel.
The family finished their meal and thanked God. They knew that their happiness came from God, not from their work alone. Their hearts were full of peace because they trusted him.
Read It Together
Psalm 128:2
For you will eat the labor of your hands. You will be happy, and it will be well with you.
(WEB)
Point out that the verse says we will eat the labor of our hands. Ask children what work they can do at home, like making their bed or helping set the table, and remind them that God cares about the good work we do.
Psalm 128:3
Your wife will be as a fruitful vine, in the innermost parts of your house; your children like olive plants, around your table.
(WEB)
Show children the picture of the vine and the olive plants in the verse. Explain that a family is like a garden where everyone grows together, and each person helps the others grow strong.
Psalm 128:4
Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD.
(WEB)
Point out that this verse says the man is blessed because he fears the Lord. Explain that fearing God means loving him, respecting him, and wanting to please him in everything we do.
Talk About It
- What does it mean to walk in God’s ways, and what is one way you can walk with God this week?
- How did the family in the story show that they were thankful to God for their food?
- What are some things that make your home feel happy and full, like the family in the psalm?
- Who in your family or church helps you grow strong, like a good vine or a strong olive tree?
- How can you show God that you love him when you are at school or with your friends?
Activity Ideas
Family Tree Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Have each child draw a big tree with branches, then write or draw the names of family members on the leaves. Talk about how each person helps the family grow strong, just like the children in the psalm are like olive plants around the table.
Olive Plant Game
You will need a few household items like a blanket or a rug. Ask children to stand in a circle, like olive plants around a table. Call out “Walk!” and have them walk slowly around the circle, then “Stop!” and have them freeze and say one thing they can thank God for. Keep the game short and cheerful.
Take-Home Blessing Jar
You will need a small jar or cup and some slips of paper. Ask children to write or draw one blessing they see in their home each day, then place it in the jar. At the end of the week, read the blessings together at the table as a family, thanking God for each one.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Psalm 128 describes a life of blessing that grows from reverence for God, daily work done faithfully, and family life lived in God’s presence. The psalm links personal faith with household joy and with the wider community of God’s people. It reminds us that our homes and our work are places where God’s goodness can be seen.
Avoid telling children that good behavior will always bring them wealth, health, or easy lives. The psalm speaks of God’s blessing in a broad sense, and children should learn that God’s love is steady even when life is hard.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank you for our families and for the good things you give us every day. Help us to love you and walk in your ways, and help us grow strong together like olive plants around the table. Bless our homes and our church, and give us peace in our hearts. Amen.
