This lesson teaches children that God hears us and keeps us safe when people are unkind or try to hurt us. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

When people are mean to us, we can tell God about it, and He will keep us safe and make things right.

Memory Verse

Psalm 140:6

I said to the LORD, “You are my God.” Listen to the cry of my petitions, the LORD.

(WEB)

Have the children cup their hands together in front of their chests, then lift them up toward the ceiling as if handing something to God. Say “You are my God” as you lift. Do this together three times so the motion and the words stay in their hands and voices.

The Story: Psalm 140 for Kids

Long ago, a man named David wrote a song to God. He was in trouble. Some people around him were full of anger and wanted to hurt him. They were always planning bad things and waiting for a chance to trap him.

David knew these people were sneaky. Their words were like poison, and they hid traps along the path where he walked. He could not stop them by himself. So David did the most important thing he could do. He turned to God and prayed.

In his prayer, David said, “You are my God.” He asked God to listen to him and to rescue him from the wicked people. He told God that he trusted Him to protect him, like a helmet keeps your head safe in a battle.

David also asked God to stop the plans of the wicked people so they would not succeed. He said that God would make sure justice was done for those who were treated unfairly. David was confident that God would take care of the people who needed help.

At the end of the song, David said that good people would give thanks to God’s name. They would live in God’s presence, close to Him. David ended his song full of hope and thankfulness.

Read It Together

Psalm 140:1

Deliver me, the LORD, from the evil man. Preserve me from the violent man…

(WEB)

Point out that David starts by asking God for help. Explain that asking God to rescue us is a good thing to do whenever we feel afraid or unsafe. Ask the children what they might pray when they feel scared.

Psalm 140:7

The LORD, the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle.

(WEB)

Show the children the picture of God covering David’s head like a helmet. Explain that God is a strong protector who keeps us safe even when we cannot see the danger coming. Remind them that God is always watching over them.

Psalm 140:12

I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the needy.

(WEB)

Point out that David knew God would take care of people who are treated unfairly. Explain that God cares about justice and fairness. Encourage the children that they can trust God to make things right in His own time.

Talk About It

  • What did David do when people were trying to hurt him?
  • How can talking to God help us when we feel scared?
  • What does it mean that God is like a helmet that protects us?
  • Why do you think it is important that God cares about fairness?
  • Who is someone you can pray for when they are having a hard time?

Activity Ideas

Paper Plate Helmet Craft

You will need paper plates, crayons or markers, and a stapler. Cut a slit in the paper plate so it can fit over a child’s head like a helmet. Let the children decorate their helmets with words like “God protects me.” Talk about how God covers us the way a helmet covers our heads.

Rescue Race Game

Set up a simple course with pillows or chairs that the children must walk around carefully. Have one child be “David” and call out “Help me, God!” before crossing the course. Let the other children cheer and guard the path. Talk about how God helps us find safe ways through hard places.

Prayer Card Take-Home

You will need index cards, a pencil, and a small ribbon or string. Ask each child to write or draw one person they want to pray for or one fear they want to give to God. Punch a hole in the corner and tie the ribbon through it. Encourage them to keep the card in their room as a reminder to pray.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 140 shows that it is appropriate to bring honest, even painful, feelings to God. David does not pretend the danger is small. He names his enemies, asks God for protection, and trusts that God will act justly. The psalm also reminds adults that God’s faithfulness is the foundation for hope in hard times.

Avoid telling children that God will always make bad people disappear quickly or that following God means we will never face danger. The psalm is a prayer of trust in God’s care, not a promise that every problem will end in a particular way. Keep the focus on God’s love and presence.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, we know that You hear us when we pray. When people are unkind or we feel scared, help us to trust You. Keep us safe like a helmet, and help us to give thanks to You every day. Amen.
