In this lesson, children learn that God protects and helps His people even when they feel scared or surrounded by trouble. It suits children aged about 5 to 11 and takes 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

When we are scared, we can call on God, and He hears us, helps us, and keeps us safe. He is our shield and the one who lifts our heads when we feel sad.

Memory Verse

Psalm 3:3

But you, the LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.

(WEB)

Teach children to hold one arm out in front of their body like a shield while they say the verse, then lift their chin up high on the words “lifts up my head.” Repeat it together three times, changing your speed each time.

The Story: Psalm 3 for Kids

King David wrote this song a long time ago. He was in big trouble, because his own son Absalom had turned against him and many people were rising up to fight him. Some of them were saying, “God will never help David now.” That must have hurt David’s heart very much.

David did not give up. He turned to God and prayed out loud, asking the LORD to help him. He told God how many enemies he had, and he trusted that God would be his shield, a strong protection all around him. David said, “You, LORD, are my glory and the one who lifts up my head.”

After praying, David lay down and went to sleep. That is a peaceful thing to do when you feel safe, and David felt safe because God was with him. When he woke up, he knew it was because the LORD had kept him safe through the night.

David said he would not be afraid, even of many, many people who were against him. He asked God to rise up and save him. He reminded God, and himself, that God had defeated his enemies and that the power to save belongs to the LORD alone.

The psalm ends with a prayer that God’s blessing would rest on all of God’s people. David wanted everyone to know that help comes from God. Children can hear that David was brave not because he was strong, but because he trusted the LORD.

Read It Together

Psalm 3:4

I cry to the LORD with my voice, and he answers me out of his holy hill. Selah.

(WEB)

Point out that David cried out to the LORD with his voice, and God answered him from His holy hill. Ask children how it feels to know God hears them when they pray, even when no one else seems to.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

Show children that David could lie down and sleep even in a hard time. Explain that God sustains us, which means He holds us up and keeps us going, so we can rest because He is watching over us.

Psalm 3:7

Arise, the LORD! Save me, my God! For you have struck all of my enemies on the cheek bone. You have broken the teeth of the wicked.

(WEB)

Ask children to notice how David asked God to arise and save him. Explain that David was talking to God like a child talks to a loving parent, asking for help with complete confidence.

Talk About It

  • What did David feel like when so many people were against him?
  • What did David do first when he was scared?
  • Why do you think David could go to sleep even though he had enemies?
  • What is one thing that makes you feel safe, like a shield around you?
  • How can you ask God for help the next time you feel worried?

Activity Ideas

Paper Shield Craft

You will need paper plates, crayons or markers, string or yarn, and tape. Have each child decorate a paper plate with symbols of things that make them feel safe, like a cross, a heart, or their family’s names. Tape a short length of yarn to the back so they can hold it up like a shield while they say the memory verse together.

Shield and Helper Game

Play a simple game where one child stands in the middle holding a pillow as a shield while the others gently try to reach them. Each time the shield-holder is touched, they say, “The LORD is my shield.” When the game ends, lift up your heads together and say, “He lifts up my head.” Keep the movements gentle and safe.

Take-Home Night Prayer Card

You will need index cards, a marker, and a small sticker for each child. Write the words “God sustains me” on one side and “I can rest in the LORD” on the other. Encourage children to read the card with a parent before bed and to pray a short sentence asking God to watch over them while they sleep.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this psalm shows that faith and fear can live side by side. David names his fear honestly, yet he also names God as his shield, his glory, and the one who lifts his head. It teaches that turning to God in trouble is an act of trust, and that rest can be a form of faith.

Avoid promising children that God will always remove every scary situation or that bad things will never happen to them. Keep the focus on God’s presence, His hearing, and His faithfulness, so children learn to trust Him in every season without feeling guilty if they still feel afraid.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for being our shield and our help. When we feel scared, help us remember that You hear us and You are close. Help us rest in You and trust that You are watching over us. Amen.
