In this lesson, children learn that God is powerful enough to make the whole world with just his word, and that he loves and takes care of the people he made. This lesson is for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God made everything by speaking, and he always keeps his promises and watches over the people who trust him.

Memory Verse

Psalm 33:9

For he spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood firm.

(WEB)

Have children stand up and hold their arms out wide like a big sky. Then have them say the verse together and slowly bring their hands together with each word. Ask them to point up toward heaven when they say “he spoke.”

The Story: Psalm 33 for Kids

A long time ago, a songwriter wrote a happy song to God. He asked all the good people to sing and play their instruments with joy. He told them to sing a brand new song because God is good and always does what is right. Everyone who loved God was invited to celebrate.

The songwriter looked up at the sky and thought about how big God is. He remembered that God made the heavens with just his words. God gathered the sea together into one place like a pile of water. He put the deep waters away in storehouses, safe and sure. Nothing was too hard for God to do.

Then the songwriter thought about the people of the world. He said that everyone should respect God, because God is the one who made them. God looks down from heaven and sees every single person. He knows what is in each heart. He sees every good thing and every bad thing that people do.

The songwriter also noticed that kings and soldiers cannot save themselves by being strong. A big army cannot save a king. A strong man cannot rescue himself on his own. Only God can truly help. The songwriter said, “Our souls wait for the Lord. He is our help and our shield.”

The people who trust God can be happy, even when times are hard. God keeps his eye on them. He cares for them when there is not enough food, and he keeps them alive. So the songwriter said, “Our hearts are glad in him, because we trust his holy name.” The song ends with a prayer asking God to keep showing his love to his people.

Read It Together

Psalm 33:4

For the LORD’s word is right. All his work is done in faithfulness.

(WEB)

Point out that God’s word is always right and that everything God does is done faithfully. Ask children to name something they know God always does the right way. Remind them that they can trust God in every situation.

Psalm 33:6

By the LORD’s word, the heavens were made; all their army by the breath of his mouth.

(WEB)

Show children that the psalm says God made the heavens by his word and by the breath of his mouth. Pretend to blow gently on your hand and ask what God made with his breath. Explain that God made everything just by speaking.

Psalm 33:18-19

18 Behold, the LORD’s eye is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his loving kindness; 19 to deliver their soul from death, to keep them alive in famine.

(WEB)

Point out that God’s eye is on the people who fear him and hope in his love. Explain that God protects his people and keeps them alive even in hard times. Let children know that God is always watching over them with care.

Talk About It

  • What is something amazing God made that you can see outside today?
  • How do you think God felt when he made the sea and the sky with just his words?
  • When have you felt safe because you knew God was taking care of you?
  • What is one way we can sing a new song to God this week?
  • Why do you think God wants us to trust him instead of trusting only in our own strength?

Activity Ideas

Paint a Sky and Sea Picture

You will need paper, paints or crayons, and a cup of water. Have children paint or draw a sky with the sun, clouds, and a big blue sea below. Explain that God made the heavens and the sea, and ask them to add one thing God made that they love. Hang the pictures where everyone can see them.

Stomp and Shout Joy Game

Gather the children in an open space and tell them that you will call out things God made. When you say “sky,” they raise their arms, when you say “sea,” they wave their hands, and when you say “joy,” they shout and clap. Repeat several times, speeding up each round. This helps children remember that we praise God with happy voices and bodies.

Take-Home Trust Jar

You will need a clean jar, paper, and a pencil. Give each child a slip of paper and ask them to write or draw one thing they are trusting God with this week. Fold the papers and place them in the jar. Encourage families to pray over the jar together at dinner and read one new verse from the psalm each night.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this psalm celebrates the power and faithfulness of God as Creator and as the one who watches over his people. It teaches that human strength and military power cannot ultimately save, and that real safety and hope are found in trusting God’s character and love. The psalm invites believers to respond with joy, worship, and confidence in God’s steady care.

Avoid overstating to children that God will always protect them from every bad thing that happens. Psalm 33 speaks of God’s watchful care and of deliverance in hard times, but children may connect it to personal promises that could confuse or hurt them when difficulties come. Focus instead on God’s faithfulness, his love, and his presence with us through every season.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for making the sky, the sea, and everything we see with your words. Thank you that you always do what is right and that you love us very much. Help us to trust you every day and to sing you happy songs of praise. Please keep watching over us and our families. Amen.
