In this lesson, children learn one simple truth: God is our rock, our safe place, and we can always trust him. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God is strong and safe, so we can trust him at all times, even when people are unkind or things feel scary. We can quietly wait for him and tell him how we feel.

Memory Verse

Psalm 62:2

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress— I will never be greatly shaken.

(WEB)

Make a fist with one hand and hold it up high, like a rock. Then cover your fist with your other hand and say the verse together. Each time you say “rock,” tap your fist with your other hand so the children feel how solid God is.

The Story: Psalm 62 for Kids

King David wrote this song when he was in a hard place. Some people were trying to hurt him and knock him down, like pushing over a wall that was starting to lean. They said kind words with their mouths, but inside they wanted to do harm. David felt worried, but he chose to think about where his help really came from.

David sat quietly and said to his own heart, “Wait for God. He is the one who helps me.” He did not have to pretend he was not afraid. He spoke honestly to God and poured out what was on his heart. David remembered that God had always been his safe place before.

David began to see that people can be here one day and gone the next, like a breath of air. Money and power do not last forever. God, though, is strong and kind, and he never changes. David decided he would not trust in bullies or in piles of stuff.

David also remembered that God is loving and faithful. God rewards people in ways that are fair and good. So David sang with confidence, knowing that his rock would hold him up.

Read It Together

Psalm 62:5

My soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my expectation is from him.

(WEB)

Point out the word “wait.” Ask the children what waiting quietly looks like, and explain that David talked to God in his heart while he waited. Show that waiting on God is a kind of trust.

Psalm 62:7

With God is my salvation and my honor. The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

(WEB)

Point out the words “salvation” and “refuge.” Explain in simple words that salvation means being saved and rescued, and a refuge is a safe place to hide. Ask who in their life feels like a safe place.

Psalm 62:8

Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.

(WEB)

Point out the phrase “pour out your heart.” Show the children that God wants us to tell him everything, the happy things and the worried things. Remind them they can talk to God any time, anywhere.

Talk About It

  • What did David feel like when people were trying to hurt him, and what did he choose to do about it?
  • What can you do when you feel scared, the way David did in this song?
  • Why do you think God is called a rock? What other things are strong and solid like a rock?
  • How can you wait quietly for God when you are worried or impatient?
  • What is one thing you could tell God about today?

Activity Ideas

Rock Painting Craft

You will need a few smooth stones, washable paint or markers, and a paper towel. Let each child paint or draw a small picture of something that makes them feel safe, like a house or a tree. Then have them write or draw the word “Rock” on the back. Talk together about how God is our strong and safe place.

Rock Solid Freeze Game

Clear a space in the room or outside. Call out “Wind!” and have the children shake and wiggle like leaves. Then call out “Rock!” and everyone freezes as still and steady as they can. Each time, say a short line from the memory verse, such as “God is my rock,” before the next round. This helps children connect the idea of stillness with trust.

Take-Home Safe Place Card

You will need a sheet of paper or an index card, a pencil, and a small envelope. Ask each child to draw a picture of their safe place with God, then write or copy the memory verse at the bottom. Let them put the card in the envelope to take home. Encourage them to read it at bedtime and talk to God about their day.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 62 is a song of quiet confidence in God in the middle of threat and opposition. David does not deny the danger. He chooses to rest his soul in God, who is his rock, salvation, and refuge. The psalm also warns against trusting in wealth, status, or oppression, since these are fragile compared with God’s faithfulness.

When teaching children, avoid overstating that God will always remove every scary situation or that faith makes problems disappear. Instead, emphasize that God is with us and worth trusting even while hard things continue. Keep the focus on God’s character rather than promising specific outcomes.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, you are our rock and our safe place. When we feel scared or worried, help us wait quietly for you and tell you how we feel. Thank you for being strong and loving, and for always being with us. Amen.
