In this lesson, children learn that God hears our prayers and gives us good things, including rain, crops, and the beautiful world around us. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God hears us when we pray, and He takes care of the whole world He made. Every rain shower and every field of grain is a gift from Him.
Memory Verse
Psalm 65:9
You visit the earth, and water it. You greatly enrich it. The river of God is full of water. You provide them grain, for so you have ordained it.
(WEB)
Have the children cup their hands together like a little bowl, then slowly wiggle their fingers down like raindrops falling. Say the verse together while you wiggle, and let the children join in on the word “water.”
The Story: Psalm 65 for Kids
Long ago, a king named David wrote a song to God. He sang about the great Temple in Jerusalem, where people came to worship and to bring their promises to God. David knew that God listens when His people pray, so he was thankful.
David looked up at the sky and thought about the rain. He saw the rain fall on the dry ground, and then the seeds began to grow. The farmers were happy because the fields were green and full of grain. David said that God takes care of the land and waters it, just like a gardener cares for a garden.
David also thought about the sea and the big waves that crash on the shore. He remembered that God is strong enough to still the roaring waters. People all over the earth, even those who lived far away, could see God’s wonders and feel safe in His power.
Then David looked at the hills and the valleys. The hills were covered with happy green plants, and the sheep grazed in the pastures. Everything looked alive and joyful. David said, “The valleys shout for joy! They sing!” It was as if the whole world was singing back to God for His kindness.
David ended his song by reminding everyone that God is the one who makes every season good. He crowns the year with His goodness, so there is always something to thank Him for.
Read It Together
Psalm 65:2
You who hear prayer, to you all men will come.
(WEB)
Point out that God is described as the One who hears prayer. Ask the children to think about a time they asked God for something, and remind them that He always listens to them.
Psalm 65:10-11
10 You drench its furrows. You level its ridges. You soften it with showers. You bless it with a crop. 11 You crown the year with your bounty. Your carts overflow with abundance.
(WEB)
Show the children how God waters the ground, softens the earth, and fills the year with good crops. Let them name a food they enjoy that grows from the earth, and thank God for it together.
Psalm 65:12-13
12 The wilderness grasslands overflow. The hills are clothed with gladness. 13 The pastures are covered with flocks. The valleys also are clothed with grain. They shout for joy! They also sing.
(WEB)
Point out the happy images of the hills, the pastures, and the valleys singing. Ask the children to imagine how the animals and plants might look when they are full of joy, and explain that God made the world to be full of happiness.
Talk About It
- What is one good thing God gives us that you can see outside your window?
- How does it feel to know that God hears you when you pray?
- What do you think the farmers in David’s time felt when the rain came?
- Why do you think the whole earth can be happy when God takes care of it?
- What is one way you can thank God for His good gifts this week?
Activity Ideas
Rainbow Crayon Field Drawing
You will need paper and crayons. Ask each child to draw green hills at the bottom of the page and a few brown furrows for the soil. Then have them draw blue rain falling from the top and yellow or golden grain growing in the fields. Let them color in the valleys and sheep, and encourage them to tell you what God’s gifts look like in their picture.
Rain Cloud Stomp Game
Clear a space in the room and have the children stand in a circle. Call out “Rain!” and they wiggle their fingers down while making soft pattering sounds with their feet. Call out “Sunshine!” and they stretch their arms high. Call out “Grain grows!” and they crouch down, then slowly rise up tall like plants. Keep the pace lively and end by having them shout “Thank You, God!” together.
Take-Home Thank You Jar
Provide a clean jar or cup and some small slips of paper for each child. Ask the children to write or draw one good thing God gave them during the week, like rain, food, a friend, or a sunny day. Have them put the paper in the jar and bring it to the next class to share. Encourage the family to read a few of the notes together at dinner time.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Psalm 65 is a song of praise that recognizes God as the One who hears prayer, forgives sin, and sustains the whole creation. It reminds us that our blessings, from harvests to everyday comforts, come from God’s faithful care. The psalm also points to God’s power over the chaos of the world, and it invites all people to trust Him.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the idea that God always gives us exactly what we ask for, since the psalm is about God’s general goodness and care for creation. Focus instead on the truth that God listens and provides, and help children trust Him even when they do not understand His plans.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for hearing us when we pray. Thank You for the rain that waters the ground and the food that grows in the fields. Help us to remember that You take care of everything You made. Amen.
