children

This lesson teaches children that God hears our prayers and takes care of the whole world, from the mountains to the fields. It is best for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God hears us, and God takes good care of everything He has made. We can thank Him for the rain, the grain, and the food on our tables.

Memory Verse

Psalm 65:2

You who hear prayer, to you all men will come.

(WEB)

Cup your hands in front of you like you are holding water, then lift them up slowly to show God listening to your prayers. Say the words with your hands moving together, and let the children copy you until everyone knows the motion by heart.

The Story: Psalm 65 for Kids

Long ago, a man named David wrote a song to God. He sang about the city of Zion, where the people went to worship. He said that everyone would one day come to God, because God is the One who hears prayers. David knew he had done wrong things, and he was sorry. He told God that God had forgiven him and wiped away his sins.

David looked around at the world God had made. He saw tall mountains standing strong. He heard the big, loud sea crashing its waves against the shore. God had made the mountains, and God calmed the roaring waves. David knew that God was powerful, and that people far away on the sea could trust Him too.

Then David looked at the fields and the hills. God sends rain to the earth, and the rain makes the ground soft and wet. The seeds grow into grain, and the farmers have plenty to eat. The river of God is full of water, and the valleys shine with new wheat. God fills the whole year with good things.

The hills were covered with happy flowers and the meadows were green. Sheep and goats grazed on the grass. The sheep were so happy that the fields sang with them. David said, “They shout for joy! They also sing!” He wanted everyone to remember that God gives us so much to be thankful for.

Read It Together

Psalm 65:9

You visit the earth, and water it. You greatly enrich it. The river of God is full of water. You provide them grain, for so you have ordained it.

(WEB)

Point out that God visits the earth and waters it. Ask the children to think of one time they saw rain fall, and remind them that God cares for the plants and the people who depend on that rain.

Psalm 65:11

You crown the year with your bounty. Your carts overflow with abundance.

(WEB)

Show the children that God crowns the year with His goodness. Explain that each season brings something new, and that God gives good things through every month of the calendar.

Psalm 65:13

The pastures are covered with flocks. The valleys also are clothed with grain. They shout for joy! They also sing.

(WEB)

Point out the happy shouting and singing at the end of the psalm. Let the children make their own loud, joyful sound, and tell them that the whole creation praises God in this way.

Talk About It

  • What is one prayer you have prayed to God this week?
  • Why do you think God wants us to bring our sins to Him?
  • What is your favorite thing God made in nature, and why do you like it?
  • How does it make you feel to know that God provides food for us and for animals?
  • What can you sing or shout to God today to thank Him for His care?

Activity Ideas

Rainbow Raindrop Craft

You will need blue construction paper, cotton balls, glue, and crayons. Have each child glue cotton balls onto the top of a sheet of paper to make clouds, then draw blue lines underneath to show falling rain. Talk about how God sends rain to water the earth while the children draw their pictures.

Mountain and Sea Freeze Game

Ask the children to stand like strong mountains with their arms raised high. Call out “waves!” and have them wiggle and roar like the sea, then call out “still!” so they freeze. Explain that God is powerful enough to calm the roaring sea, and play a few rounds to practice listening carefully.

Thankful Harvest Jar

Gather a clean jar, some slips of paper, and a pencil. Each day at home, have the family write one thing God provided on a slip and drop it into the jar. At the end of the week, read the notes together aloud and thank God for each gift.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 65 shows that God is both the One who hears prayer and the One who sustains creation. The psalm connects forgiveness of sin with the blessing of harvest, so that the worship of God is grounded in His generosity and His power over the natural world. Its vision of all nations coming to God includes the wider world beyond Israel.

With children, avoid suggesting that good weather or a good harvest always follows from being good or praying the right way. Psalm 65 celebrates God’s faithful care without promising that our circumstances will always go the way we hope, so keep the focus on thankfulness and trust.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for hearing us when we pray. Thank You for the rain, the grain, the mountains, and the sea. Help us trust that You take care of us every day, and help us shout and sing to You with joy. Amen.
