This lesson teaches children that God is wonderful and powerful, and that He cares for each person, even small children. It works well for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God is amazing, and He thinks about us and loves us, even though He made the whole big world and the sky full of stars.

Memory Verse

Psalm 8:1

The LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth, who has set your glory above the heavens!

(WEB)

Hold both arms up high like the sky, then wiggle your fingers slowly down as if you are spreading out the stars. Say the verse together while you move, and do it three times until everyone is smiling.

The Story: Psalm 8 for Kids

King David was a shepherd boy before he became king. One night he lay outside under the dark sky and looked up. The sky was covered with twinkling stars and the bright moon. He felt very small.

David began to talk to God. He said, “Lord, you made all of this with your fingers. Why would you think about someone as small as me?” David knew God was great and mighty. His name was known all over the earth.

David also noticed that God uses even little children to show His strength. Babies and young children can praise Him, and their voices help to quiet God’s enemies. God is strong, and He uses the smallest voices to shine.

God did something amazing for people. He made us a little lower than the angels and gave us a crown of glory and honor. He made people rulers over the sheep, cows, birds, and fish. God trusted people to take care of His good world.

At the end of the song, David said once more how wonderful God’s name is. The Lord is our Lord, and His name is majestic in all the earth. David was thankful that God cared for him.

Read It Together

Psalm 8:3-4

3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained; 4 what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?

(WEB)

Point out how David looked at the sky and then asked a question about himself. Ask the children what they see when they look up at the night sky. Help them see that God made the moon and stars, and that He still thinks about us.

Psalm 8:5

For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor.

(WEB)

Show the children that God gave people glory and honor. Explain that this does not mean we are better than others, but that God chose to give us a special place in His world. Ask how we can show that we value the gift.

Psalm 8:6-8

6 You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet: 7 All sheep and cattle, yes, and the animals of the field, 8 The birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

(WEB)

Point out the animals in the list: sheep, cattle, birds, and fish. Explain that God trusted people to care for these creatures. Ask the children how they can take care of animals or things God has made.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing God made in the sky that you think is beautiful?
  • How did David feel when he looked up at the stars?
  • Why do you think God would use a baby’s voice to show His strength?
  • What are some animals God gave us to take care of?
  • How can you show God that you think His name is wonderful this week?

Activity Ideas

Star Night Sky Craft

You will need black construction paper, white crayons or chalk, and a pencil. Have each child draw a few dots and simple shapes on the black paper to make stars and a moon. As they work, ask them to name one thing God made that they see in the sky. Hang the finished pictures where everyone can see them.

Shepherd and Sheep Game

Choose one child to be the shepherd and let the others be sheep. The shepherd tries to gently guide the sheep around a room or yard, and the sheep follow carefully. Between rounds, say a line like “God takes care of His creatures,” then switch roles. Keep the movements slow and calm.

Take-Home Star Bookmark

You will need paper strips, a hole punch, and a piece of yarn or ribbon. Let each child decorate a strip with a star and write or draw their favorite word about God, such as majestic or caring. Punch a hole at the top and tie the ribbon through it. Encourage the child to share the bookmark with someone at home and say the memory verse together.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 8 is a song of wonder that moves from praise of God’s name to amazement that such a great God would care for human beings. The psalm also shows that God’s strength is displayed through humble, even childlike, praise. It invites us to see our human role as stewards of creation under God’s rule.

Avoid suggesting to children that God only loves them when they are good or that they must earn His attention. Keep the focus on God’s greatness and His care, which the psalm presents as a gift.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, you are wonderful and your name is great in all the earth. Thank you for the moon and stars and for the animals you made. Help us remember that you care for each one of us. Help us take good care of your world. Amen.
