This lesson teaches children that God’s house is a lovely place to be, and that it is good to want to be near God. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short story, a few verses, and one simple activity.

Big Idea

God is wonderful, and it is good to long to be close to him. Being with God is better than anything else we could have.

Memory Verse

Psalm 84:10

For a day in your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

(WEB)

Hold both hands over your heart, then slowly open them out toward the class as you say the verse together. Repeat it three times, getting a little softer each time, until everyone can say it with the motions.

The Story: Psalm 84 for Kids

Long ago, a man named David wrote a song about the house of God. In his day, God’s people gathered at a special place called the temple in Jerusalem. It was where they went to worship and pray, and David loved being there more than almost anything.

David was so eager to be near God that he said his heart and body felt like they were crying out for him. He said he wanted to be in God’s courts more than anywhere else. He even noticed that little birds had found homes near God’s altar, and he thought that was a happy sight.

David told the people that the people who live close to God are truly happy. When they travel to God’s house, they walk through hard and dry valleys, but they turn those places into places full of fresh water and blessing. Their journey grows stronger with every step.

Then David said something very clear. He told God that one day in God’s house was better than a thousand days anywhere else. He said he would rather stand at the door of God’s house than live in a place full of wrong and sin.

Finally, David reminded everyone that God is like a bright sun and a strong shield. God gives kindness and good things to those who walk honestly with him. David ended by saying that the person who trusts in God is truly blessed.

Read It Together

Psalm 84:1-2

1 How lovely are your dwellings, the LORD of Armies! 2 My soul longs, and even faints for the courts of the LORD. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

(WEB)

Point out the words “lovely” and “longs.” Ask the children to show with their faces how someone looks when they really miss a friend, and explain that David felt that way about being close to God.

Psalm 84:4

Blessed are those who dwell in your house. They are always praising you. Selah.

(WEB)

Show the children that this verse says people who live with God are always praising him. Ask them to name a few things they could praise God for right now, and let them say them out loud.

Psalm 84:11

For the LORD God is a sun and a shield. The LORD will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly.

(WEB)

Explain that God is like a sun that gives light and a shield that keeps us safe. Have the children hold up one hand like a sun and the other like a shield, and talk about how God takes care of them.

Talk About It

  • What do you think it would feel like to really want to be somewhere because it makes you so happy?
  • Where is a place you love to go to be close to people who care about you?
  • How can you show God that you want to be close to him, even on a busy day?
  • What is one thing God has given you that makes you thankful?
  • Why do you think David said one day with God is better than a thousand days anywhere else?

Activity Ideas

Draw a Happy Nest

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a few cotton balls. Ask each child to draw a tree with a little bird’s nest in it, then glue on cotton balls as soft feathers or grass. As they work, have them think of one place where God is close to them, and draw a small heart in the nest to remember it.

Sun and Shield Movement Game

You will need an open space and a soft ball or a beanbag. Call out “Sun!” and have the children stretch their arms wide like rays of light, then call out “Shield!” and have them cross their arms in front of their chest. Mix the two calls quickly and let the children tell you what each one reminds them of about God.

Take-Home Thankful Jar

You will need an empty jar, paper slips, and a pen. Give each child a few slips and ask them to write or draw one thing they love about being close to God. They can fold the slips and place them in the jar at home, then read a few together at dinner each week. This helps families keep talking about God’s goodness.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 84 expresses a deep longing for God’s presence and a settled joy in worship. The psalmist treats the journey to God’s house as a source of strength, and he values God’s nearness above every earthly comfort. It is a picture of trusting God as protector and giver of good things.

Avoid suggesting to children that God only loves them when they come to church or that good things will always come to people who attend worship. The psalm speaks of joy in God himself, and children should hear it as an invitation to love God, not as a rule for earning his favor.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank you for being so good and so near to us. Help us want to be close to you every day, at church and at home. Thank you that you are our sun and our shield, and that we can trust you. Amen.
