children

This lesson teaches children that God is king and that nothing in the world is stronger than him. It is built for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, a few verses, and an activity.

Big Idea

God is the King, he is strong, and he is always in charge, even when the storms of life get very loud.

Memory Verse

Psalm 93:1

The LORD reigns! He is clothed with majesty! The LORD is armed with strength. The world also is established. It can’t be moved.

(WEB)

Stand up tall and lift both arms high like a king raising his crown. Then cross your arms firmly over your chest and say the verse together, stomping your feet once for each word of “The LORD reigns.”

The Story: Psalm 93 for Kids

Long ago, a songwriter sat down to write a song about God. He looked out at the world and saw how big and strong it was. The ground under his feet did not wobble, and the earth stayed exactly where God had placed it. He wanted everyone to know that God was the true King.

The songwriter also looked at the sea. Big waves rolled and crashed, and the water roared like a crowd of shouting people. It looked scary, but the songwriter knew something important. He said, in his own words, “The waves may be loud, but God is louder and stronger than the sea.”

Then he remembered that God had always been there. Before the mountains rose up and before the first waves began to roll, God was already alive and already ruling. He never started and he never stops. The songwriter felt safe knowing that God’s rule never changes.

So he ended his song by thinking about God’s house. He said that God’s rules are steady and true, and that holiness belongs to God forever. The people who sang this song learned that God is faithful from the very beginning until the very end.

Read It Together

Psalm 93:2

Your throne is established from long ago. You are from everlasting.

(WEB)

Point out that God’s throne has been there since long ago and that he has no beginning or end. Ask children to notice the words “from long ago” and “everlasting,” and explain that God is always the same.

Psalm 93:3-4

3 The floods have lifted up, the LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves. 4 Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty.

(WEB)

Show children how the writer compares the noisy floods and waves to God’s greater strength. Help them see that God is mightier than even the loudest and biggest things in creation.

Psalm 93:5

Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, the LORD, forever more.

(WEB)

Explain that God’s rules are firm and they do not change. Point out that holiness, which means being pure and good, belongs to God’s house forever, and that we can trust what he says.

Talk About It

  • What do you think it feels like when a big storm is loud and scary outside?
  • How does it help you to know that God is stronger than any storm?
  • What are some things in the world that God made that stay in the right place every day?
  • Why do you think God’s rules and words can always be trusted?
  • When you feel afraid, what is one thing you can remember about God being King?

Activity Ideas

Crown Drawing Craft

You will need paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and tape. Have each child draw a large crown and decorate it with gold and bright colors. While they work, talk about how a crown shows a king’s authority. Cut out the crowns and tape them to a strip of paper to make a headband, reminding children that God is the true King of all.

Storm and Calm Movement Game

Ask children to stand in an open space. Call out “storm” and have them wiggle, stomp, and wave their arms like crashing waves. Then call out “King” and have them freeze, stand tall, and raise their arms like a strong king. Repeat several times, explaining that no matter how loud the storm gets, God stays strong and calm.

Take-Home Verse Card

You will need index cards, a pen, and a few stickers if you have them. Write “The LORD reigns!” on the front of each card and draw a simple crown beneath it. Give one card to each child and encourage them to put it by their bed or on the fridge. Ask them to read it each night and remember that God is in charge, even when things feel uncertain.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 93 is a short hymn that celebrates God’s kingship over creation and history. It moves from God’s rule over the world, to his eternal existence, to the steadiness of his word and the holiness of his people. It offers comfort to anyone who feels overwhelmed by the chaos around them, reminding us that God’s authority is not shaken by the powers that rage.

With children, avoid suggesting that faith means the storms in their lives will never happen or that God will always calm the weather they experience. The psalm celebrates God’s strength and faithfulness, not a guarantee of how every situation will turn out. Help children trust God’s character, not expect a specific outcome.

A Prayer to Close

Lord God, you are our King, and you are strong and holy forever. When the storms around us feel loud, help us remember that you are in charge. Thank you for being steady and faithful from long ago until forever. Help us trust you every day. Amen.
