Revelation 13 teaches children that God is still in charge even when scary things seem to be winning, and that we stay faithful to Jesus no matter what. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, questions, and an activity.

Big Idea

God is stronger than every scary beast, so we keep trusting Jesus and belonging to Him, even when it is hard.

Memory Verse

Revelation 13:10

If anyone is to go into captivity, he will go into captivity. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, he must be killed. Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints.

(WEB)

Teach the children to hold both hands up in front of their chests, fingers pressed together, like they are praying. Say the verse slowly while they hold that pose, then have them lift their hands higher as they say “endurance and faith” to remind themselves to keep trusting.

The Story: Revelation 13 for Kids

John was an old man living on a rocky island called Patmos, where he had been sent because he told people about Jesus. One day he stood on the sand by the sea and saw something frightening rising up out of the water. It was a beast with ten horns and seven heads, and it looked like a mix of a leopard, a bear, and a lion. The beast had a lot of power, and people around the world were amazed by it.

Then John saw a second beast coming up out of the ground. This beast had two horns like a lamb, but when it spoke, it sounded like a dragon. It made fire come down from the sky, and it tricked many people. It told them to build a big statue of the first beast and to bow down to it.

The second beast even made the statue able to speak. Anyone who refused to bow down was in danger. Some people were given a special mark on their hands or foreheads, and nobody could buy or sell anything without it. The beasts wanted everyone to belong to them instead of to God.

John wanted the children who heard his letter to be brave. So he said, “Here is what you should remember: if anyone is to be taken away or hurt because they love Jesus, they must still keep trusting Him.” Some of the people he wrote to had already been hurt for their faith, and John wanted them to know that God saw them.

The story also tells us that the names of God’s people are written in the Lamb’s book of life. That means God knows exactly who belongs to Him. The beasts could not take that away.

John ended with a secret clue about a number, and he told his readers to think carefully about it. The point was not to guess a puzzle, but to remember that God is wise and that the beasts were not as powerful as they pretended to be.

Read It Together

Revelation 13:8

All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been killed.

(WEB)

Point out that the verse talks about people whose names are written in the book of life of the Lamb. Explain that this means God knows and loves each child by name, and nothing can erase that.

Revelation 13:7

It was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them. Authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation was given to him.

(WEB)

Show the children that the beast was given power by the dragon, not by God. Help them see that bad power is only allowed for a while, and it does not belong to the beast in the end.

Revelation 13:14

He deceives my own people who dwell on the earth because of the signs he was granted to do in front of the beast; saying to those who dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast who had the sword wound and lived.

(WEB)

Point out the word “deceives.” Explain that the second beast was tricking people with fake signs, so we should always check what we are told against what Jesus teaches us in the Bible.

Talk About It

  • What do you think it would feel like to be John, seeing these frightening things on the island?
  • Why do you think the beasts wanted people to bow down to them instead of to God?
  • How can you tell when someone is trying to trick you into doing something wrong?
  • What does it mean that your name is written in the Lamb’s book of life?
  • What is one way you can keep trusting Jesus this week, even when something feels scary?

Activity Ideas

Draw Your Book of Life Page

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a page for the Lamb’s book of life and write their own name at the top, decorating it with pictures of things that remind them God knows them. Let them take it home and tape it on their bedroom door or refrigerator.

Beast or Shepherd Freeze Game

Clear a space in the room and tell the children that when you say “beast,” they must freeze and growl like a lion, and when you say “shepherd,” they must run to you and say “Jesus is with me.” Keep the pace fun and change the order quickly. End by reminding them that Jesus is stronger than any beast.

Faith Reminder Card

You will need index cards, a pen, and a hole punch with string or ribbon. Write the memory verse phrase “endurance and faith” on each card and let each child decorate it. Punch a hole in the corner, thread the ribbon through, and suggest they hang it on a backpack or bedpost as a daily reminder to keep trusting Jesus.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Revelation 13 is written in symbolic language to encourage believers facing pressure to compromise their faith. The beasts represent powers that demand loyalty that belongs only to God, and the chapter calls God’s people to patient endurance and faithfulness. Interpretations of the specific symbols, including the number 666, vary widely among Christians, so it is wise to focus on the chapter’s main encouragement.

With children, avoid overstating the frightening details or treating the beasts as something to fear more than God. Keep the focus on God’s faithfulness and His people’s security in Him, and avoid guessing at modern predictions or specific future events.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You that You are stronger than every scary thing. Help us keep trusting Jesus, even when it is hard, and remind us that our names are written in Your book. Keep us brave and close to You every day. Amen.
