This lesson teaches children that God knows and keeps His people safe, even when the world around them seems scary or confusing. It suits children roughly 5 to 11, and the full lesson takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God knows His people, and He keeps them close to Him. Even when everything around us feels frightening, we belong to Jesus, and He never forgets us.
Memory Verse
Revelation 14:4
These are those who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These were redeemed by Jesus from among men, the first fruits to God and to the Lamb.
(WEB)
Teach the children to hold both hands up in front of their chests, then bring them together as they say the verse slowly. Let them follow the Lamb by walking one step forward with each word.
The Story: Revelation 14 for Kids
John was an old man who had been sent to a small island because he loved Jesus and told others about Him. One day he had a very big dream, and in it he saw something amazing. He saw Jesus the Lamb standing on a mountain called Mount Zion, and with Him were 144,000 people. Each of them had Jesus’ name and His Father’s name written on their foreheads, so everyone could see whose they were.
Then John heard a sound from heaven, like a huge crashing waterfall and a loud rumble of thunder all at once. It was also like the music of harps being played. The people on the mountain were singing a brand-new song before God’s throne. Nobody could learn that song except the ones who had been bought back by Jesus from the earth. They followed the Lamb everywhere He went, and no lie was ever found in their mouths.
Next, John saw an angel flying high in the sky with the best news ever, and the angel called out loudly, “Fear the Lord and give Him glory, because the time has come for Him to judge! Worship the One who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and the springs of water!” Then two more angels came. The second one said that the great city of Babylon had fallen. The third angel warned that anyone who worships the beast and takes his mark would have a very sad ending.
After that, John saw a voice from heaven speaking to him. It said, “Write this down: Blessed are the people who die in the Lord from now on.” The Spirit said that they can rest from their hard work, because the good things they did for Jesus go with them. John then saw a white cloud, and sitting on it was someone like a Son of Man, wearing a golden crown. Angels came out of God’s temple to tell Him when the harvest was ready, and He gathered the crops of the earth.
Read It Together
Revelation 14:1
I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a number, one hundred forty-four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads.
(WEB)
Point out that Jesus is standing on Mount Zion with His people, and that His name is written on their foreheads. Ask the children what it would feel like to know that Jesus is always right beside you.
Revelation 14:13
I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write, ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors; for their works follow with them.”
(WEB)
Show the children the words “that they may rest from their labors.” Explain that God promises rest and reward to those who love Him, and that He remembers every good thing we do for Him.
Revelation 14:7
He said with a loud voice, “Fear the Lord, and give him glory; for the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and the springs of waters!”
(WEB)
Point out that the angel told everyone to worship God because He made everything. Remind the children that worshipping God means loving Him, thanking Him, and praising Him for who He is.
Talk About It
- What did John see the Lamb standing on, and why do you think that place matters?
- How do you think the people on the mountain felt when they sang the new song?
- What is one way you can show the world whose you are, the way the people had Jesus’ name on their foreheads?
- When you feel scared, what could you remember about Jesus being close to you?
- What is one good thing you can do this week to follow Jesus wherever He leads?
Activity Ideas
Name on the Forehead Craft
You will need paper plates, markers, glue, and yarn or string. Have each child draw a simple picture of a mountain on a paper plate, then write “Jesus” in bold letters on a sticky note or small paper strip and glue it where the forehead would be on a cutout face. Let the children decorate their plates and tie a loop of yarn to hang them up as a reminder that they belong to Jesus.
Follow the Lamb Game
You will need a small stuffed animal or a soft ball to be the Lamb, and a open space like a hallway or yard. Have one child be the Lamb and walk slowly to the front while the others follow in a line. Each time the Lamb stops, everyone sings the memory verse together and then walks on. Switch leaders so every child gets a turn being the Lamb.
Take-Home Reminder Card
You will need index cards, a pencil, and a small hole punch with ribbon. Help each child write “Jesus is with me” on one side and “Revelation 14:4” on the other. Punch a hole in the corner and tie the ribbon through so they can hang it on a bedpost, backpack, or mirror at home. Encourage them to read it aloud each morning before school.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Revelation 14 gives a vision of God’s people belonging to Him fully, even in a world full of opposition and confusion. The chapter comforts believers with the picture of the Lamb standing with His people and the promise that the dead who die in the Lord are blessed and will rest from their labors. It also reminds us that God will judge evil and bring His plans to completion.
With children, avoid overstating the frightening images of judgment, the sickles, the wine press, and the torment described in the text. Keep the focus on Jesus being with His people, on God’s faithfulness, and on the rest He gives, so the lesson stays hopeful and age appropriate.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Jesus, thank You that we belong to You and that You are always with us. Help us follow You wherever You lead, even when things feel scary. Thank You that You keep us safe and remember every good thing we do for You. We love You. Amen.
