In this lesson, children learn that Jesus knows everything we do and wants us to keep loving him with our whole hearts, even when life is hard. It is written for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach, including reading, talking and one activity.
Big Idea
Jesus sees how we live, he is pleased when we keep trusting and loving him, and he helps us when we forget. We never have to be afraid of him, because he is kind and faithful.
Memory Verse
Revelation 2:10
Don’t be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested; and you will have oppression for ten days. Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Teach the children to hold both hands over their hearts while saying the verse, then lift their arms high like a crown on the words about the crown of life. Let them practice it together three times so the motion helps them remember the words.
The Story: Revelation 2 for Kids
Long ago, the apostle John was an old man living on a far away island called Patmos. Jesus gave John a special letter to send to several churches in a region called Asia. Each church had a messenger, and Jesus told John to write a message to each one. These churches were full of people who loved Jesus, and Jesus knew all about them.
The first church was in a city called Ephesus. Jesus said, “I know your works and your hard work.” The people had been working hard to follow Jesus and standing strong against wrong things. But Jesus also said, “You have left your first love.” They had started to forget how much they first loved him. Jesus asked them to remember, to turn back to him, and to love him the way they did at the start.
Next, Jesus wrote to the church in Smyrna. These people were poor and had trouble from others, and some were going to be put in prison. Jesus did not want them to be scared. He said, “Be faithful, even until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” He promised them that they would be safe with him forever.
Then Jesus sent a message to the church in Pergamum. These believers lived where bad things happened, but they had held on to Jesus and had not given up their faith, even when one of their friends was killed. Some people in that church had started listening to teachings that were not right. Jesus told them to turn back and be true to him.
Finally, Jesus wrote to the church in Thyatira. They were growing in love and faith and were working hard to serve others. However, some were letting a false teacher lead them away from the truth. Jesus told them he sees everything, and he said, “I am not putting any other burden on you. Hold firmly to what you have until I come.” Jesus was asking them to keep going in the right way.
Read It Together
Revelation 2:2-3
2 “I know your works, and your toil and perseverance, and that you can’t tolerate evil men, and have tested those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and found them false. 3 You have perseverance and have endured for my name’s sake, and have not grown weary.

Point out that Jesus noticed the hard work and patience of the Ephesian church. Ask the children to name something good they do that Jesus notices, like helping at home or being patient with a sibling.
Revelation 2:4-5
4 But I have this against you, that you left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I am coming to you swiftly, and will move your lamp stand out of its place, unless you repent.

Show the children that Jesus gently asks his people to remember their first love and come back to him. Explain that turning back to Jesus is always possible, and he is ready to welcome us when we do.
Revelation 2:26-28
26 He who overcomes, and he who keeps my works to the end, to him I will give authority over the nations. 27 He will rule them with a rod of iron, shattering them like clay pots; as I also have received of my Father: 28 and I will give him the morning star.

Explain that Jesus gives a promise to those who keep loving and trusting him to the end. Help the children see that this is a reward of being close to Jesus, and he gives it with love.
Talk About It
- What is one thing the church in Ephesus did that was good?
- How do you think it felt for the people in Smyrna to be told not to be afraid?
- What can we do to keep loving Jesus the way we did when we first started knowing him?
- Why do you think Jesus wanted the people to turn back to him when they forgot?
- How does it help you to know that Jesus sees everything we do?
Activity Ideas
Draw Your Own Crown
Give each child a strip of paper, crayons, markers, and tape or a stapler. Let them draw jewels, stars, or flowers on the strip and then tape it into a circle that fits their head. As they wear their crowns, remind them that Jesus promises us the crown of life when we stay faithful to him.
Turn Around Game
Set out five paper cups in a row to represent the five churches. Have the children walk toward one cup, then pretend to forget where they were going and stop. Call out “Turn back!” and have them turn around and walk back the way they came, reminding them that Jesus welcomes us when we return to him.
Take-Home Lamp Stand
Give each child a small paper cup, a tea light or flashlight, and a sticky note. Ask them to write or draw one way they will remember to love Jesus this week on the note and stick it to the cup. The cup becomes a lamp to place by their bed as a reminder to keep their first love for Jesus burning brightly.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Revelation 2 shows that Jesus knows the real condition of every believer and speaks to churches with both honest correction and generous encouragement. The chapter reminds us that faithfulness, patient endurance, and returning to our first love matter deeply to Christ, and that he holds out rewards for those who remain true to him.
Avoid overstating the imagery of the stars, the lampstands, the white stone, or the iron rod to children, since the symbolism is rich and debated among scholars. Keep the focus on Jesus seeing us, loving us, and calling us back to him, which is clear and trustworthy for young learners.
A Prayer to Close
Jesus, thank you that you see everything we do and that you love us so much. Help us remember our first love for you and stay faithful even when things are hard. When we forget, help us turn back to you. Thank you for the crown of life you promise to all who trust you. Amen.
