This lesson teaches children that Jesus is in charge of everything that happens, even when things look scary. Children aged about 5 to 11 can learn it in 20 to 30 minutes, using the story, a memory verse, a few Bible verses to read together, and a simple activity.

Big Idea

Jesus is in charge, and He is good. Even when the world feels frightening, we can trust Him to make things right in His own time.

Memory Verse

Revelation 6:1

I saw that the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying, as with a voice of thunder, “Come and see!”

(WEB)

Ask the children to hold up both hands, palms out, like someone opening a book. As they say the verse together, they slowly open their hands wider, showing that Jesus is the One who opens what is closed. Let them do it a few times until it feels like a game.

The Story: Revelation 6 for Kids

John was an old follower of Jesus who was living on a lonely island called Patmos. One day he saw a very special book with seven seals on it, like seven locks. Only the Lamb, who is Jesus, was worthy to open the seals. John watched as the Lamb began to open them, one at a time.

When the first seal opened, a white horse came out. The rider had a bow and a crown, and he went out to win. Then a red horse came out, and its rider was given power to take peace away from the earth. When the third seal opened, a black horse came out, and its rider held a set of scales. A voice said that food would cost a lot of money, but the oil and wine should be kept safe.

When the fourth seal opened, a pale horse came out, and its rider was named Death. Some of the people on earth were hurt by sickness and hunger and wild animals. John then saw the souls of people who had been killed for loving God. They cried out, asking how long it would be before God made things right. God told them to wait a little longer and gave each one a white robe.

When the sixth seal opened, there was a great earthquake. The sun went dark, the moon looked red like blood, and the stars fell down like figs shaken from a tree. The sky rolled up like a scroll. The people of the earth, even the kings and the rich, hid in the caves and cried out for the mountains to cover them.

Imagine how scared those people felt. They were hiding because they knew that God was angry at wrong things. They asked the mountains to fall on them, because they were afraid of standing before Jesus. This shows us that the world may look very strong, but no one can hide from God.

Read It Together

Revelation 6:2

And behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow. A crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.

(WEB)

Point out that the rider on the white horse went out to conquer. Ask the children to notice that the Lamb is the One opening the seals, so everything that happens is still under His control.

Revelation 6:9-11

9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed for the Word of God, and for the testimony of the Lamb which they had. 10 They cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 A long white robe was given to each of them. They were told that they should rest yet for a while, until their fellow servants and their brothers, who would also be killed even as they were, should complete their course.

(WEB)

Show the children that God hears the prayers of His people who suffer for Him. Explain that God is patient and that He cares about every person who trusts Him, even when they must wait.

Revelation 6:16-17

16 They told the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of his wrath has come; and who is able to stand?”

(WEB)

Help the children see that the people in this verse were afraid of God’s judgment. Explain that we do not need to be afraid of Jesus, because He came to save those who trust Him.

Talk About It

  • Why do you think the people hid in the caves instead of asking Jesus for help?
  • What is one thing in the world that makes you feel scared, and what can you remember about Jesus when you feel that way?
  • Why do you think God told the people who were suffering to wait a little longer?
  • How does it feel to know that Jesus is holding the book with the seals?
  • What is one way you can trust Jesus this week when things seem uncertain?

Activity Ideas

Lamb and Seven Seals Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a big book with seven small seal stamps along one edge. Inside the book, they can draw a small lamb or a simple cross. Let them color the seals in different colors, and talk about how each seal represents something God is in charge of.

Open the Seals Game

You will need seven paper cups or pieces of paper labeled 1 through 7, and a small toy or stone. Hide the stone under one cup while the children close their eyes. Then let them take turns finding it by lifting a cup. Explain that Jesus knows exactly where everything is, just as He knows where each seal opens. Repeat a few rounds and cheer for each child who finds it.

Take-Home Trust Card

You will need an index card, a pen, and a rubber band. Have each child write on the card, “Jesus is in charge, and I can trust Him,” and decorate it with a simple lamb. Encourage them to keep it in a pocket or backpack. When they feel worried, they can take it out, read it, and remember who holds the future.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Revelation 6 describes God’s sovereignty over history and His justice toward the wicked. The seals show that everything unfolds under the authority of the Lamb, who was slain and has been raised, and that God hears the cries of His suffering people. The chapter is written in symbolic and apocalyptic language, so the focus is on God’s control and faithfulness, not on predicting specific events.

When teaching children, avoid overstating fear or details about the end of the world. Children may become anxious if the imagery of earthquakes and falling stars is emphasized too heavily. Keep the focus on Jesus as the trustworthy Lamb who is in charge and who loves His people.

A Prayer to Close

Jesus, we thank You that You are in charge of everything. When we feel scared or worried, help us remember that You are good and You hold the future in Your hands. Help us trust You while we wait, and help us tell others about Your love. Amen.
